One Punch Man, a Japanese webcomic created by the author ONE, began in 2009 as a somewhat crude parody of the famous Shonen Jump style manga. The name and main character are also parodies of the extremely popular Japanese children's animation, Anpanman. Saitama is the protagonist of One Punch Man and wears a yellow suit with red gloves, boots and cape. He also has the power to defeat any enemy with a single punch, as the title implies. Inversely, the titular protagonist of Anpanman wears a red suit with yellow gloves, boots, and cape and also has the ability to defeat his enemy with a single strong punch. The original webcomic quickly became viral partially due to its simple scribbled drawing style and parallels to stereotypical hero comics. After amassing over 100 million views, the webcomic was redrawn by Yusuke Murata (of Eyeshield 21 fame) and released by Shueisha’s Young Jump Next publication. The first chapter was released in 2012 and have since been released together in 20 tankobon volumes by the end of 2019. 17 of these volumes have been translated and licensed by Viz Media for overseas release.

With Shingo Natsume overseeing the production, Madhouse adapted the manga for a TV anime adaptation, which aired in Japan in 2015. Its overwhelming popularity led to a second season announcement in 2016 after the English language version was released. In 2017, it was announced that the second season would be directed by Chikara Sakurai and animated by J.C.Staff. Despite the change in studio and director, the animation style and quality remains consistent between the series and continues to follow the source material closely. The second season aired in Japan in 2019. Since its inception and rise to stardom in the manga and anime world, there has been a lot of One Punch Man merchandise and apparel produced. Though a third season has yet to be officially announced, now is the time to adorn One Punch Man t-shirts and get ready. Three awesome best selling designs are: “The Earth is in Trouble”, “Justice Enforcement” and “Super Fight 22”.

About Saitama

Saitama was originally a normal worker who became disillusioned with life after losing his job. Returning from job interviews one day and at a park nearby, he happened to come across Crablante, a monster that was once human until they ate too many crabs one day. The monster was searching for a little boy with a humongous cleft chin who had drawn nipples on his chest while he was asleep. When Crablante attempted to kill the child, however, Saitama managed to kill the lobster monster with his necktie, despite having no experience in fighting. After the fateful encounter, Saitama was pushed into fulfilling his dreams of becoming a hero.

After following a strict training regiment, Saitama gained an unbelievable amount of power, allowing him to defeat all of his enemies in a single punch. There are times when he doesn’t, but this is because he does not kill humans and sometimes misjudges the power needed to kill certain monsters that have regenerative abilities. In spite of this, the Hero Association rank he is assigned is C-Rank, the lowest rank in the system, though his self-proclaimed disciple, Genos, is an S-Rank hero. The running gag seems to be that only a handful of people are aware of Saitama’s power. While the other heroes are constantly looking down on him for being a C-Rank hero, they are always struggling to beat extremely strong enemies that he can kill with one punch. Even though Saitama can end any threat instantly, his internal conflict about being a hero always makes him show up late, or sometimes not at all when everyone is in trouble, thus creating the drama that drives the series.
