One Piece, a superstar in the manga world, is a Japanese manga series created by illustrious manga author Eiichiro Oda. First appearing in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1997, One Piece has shown no signs of slowing down. With 95 tankobon volumes released as of March 2020, Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates are still in hot pursuit of the legendary treasure named One Piece. The animated television series produced by Toei Animation began airing in 1999 and has continued for over twenty years. Also including fourteen animated feature films, and thirteen TV specials, the One Piece franchise is a media powerhouse. English translations of the manga are distributed in the US and UK by Viz Media and by Madman Entertainment in Australia. An English localization of the anime was licensed by 4Kids Entertainment in 2004, but was then acquired by Funimation in 2007. One Piece also has mountains of merchandise available. Here are four items that are examples of popular One Piece merchandise: the “One Piece Good Food Tastes Good Rubber Mascot Mogu Mogu Box Set”, the “One Piece Grand Ship Collection: Ark Maxim”, and the “Shonen Jump Reproduction Panel Print: One Piece - A”.

One Piece Good Food Tastes Good Rubber Mascot Mogu Mogu Box Set

As is always the case with Eichiro Oda’s style, characters can be as terrifying as the villainous Blackbeard, or cute like Tony Tony Chopper. These rubber ball-chain keyrings are just that - cute. This set includes eight keychains with seven characters to collect. There is Luffy eating two huge manga-style meat bones, Chopper getting caught up in some sweet and sticky cotton candy, Sanji the cook presenting plates of pasta, Zoro enjoying a few drinks, and more. The handy ball-chain allows it to be attached to personal items such as one’s bag, cell phone, and so on.

Enel, the ruler of Skypiea and self-proclaimed god once ate the Rumble-Rumble Fruit, turning him into a logia-type Devil Fruit user with the ability to transform into and manipulate lightning. Aside from his excellent combat abilities, Enel was also an incredibly skilled engineer. His ship, the Ark Maxim, was completely designed and built by God Enel himself. Using this ship, he can also power up his Devil Fruit power. God Enel’s ship, the Ark Maxim itself is very special though, as it's one of the only ships that has been able to go to the moon. This model attempts to recreate the Ark Maxim as accurately as possible and includes a number of pieces to help simulate flight.

About One Piece

One Piece follows the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates as they make their way through the Grand Line in search of the fabled treasure left behind by Gol D. Roger called One Piece. The story centers around Monkey D. Luffy, the captain and leader of the Straw Hat Pirates. Luffy is an average height somewhat slender young man with a scar on his cheek and an iconic straw hat. When he was a child, he accidentally ate the “Gum-Gum Fruit”, which turned his body into rubber. Inspired by the famous and feared pirate lord Shanks, Luffy decided to start his own quest for the fabled treasure, One Piece. Along the way, he meets a pirate-hunter named Roronoa Zoro who, despite being a pirate hunter, decides to join Luffy’s crew after Luffy saves him from being executed. Also joining Luffy on his quest to become king of the pirates are Nami, the navigator thief; Usopp, the lying sniper; and Sanji, a chef with a passion for the ladies. The crew receive their first real pirate ship, the “Going Merry'' and set off on their adventure in the East Blue. Later joining the crew are the Human-Human Fruit using reindeer doctor known as Tony Tony Chopper; an archaeologist and assassin, Nico Robin; a super robot shipwright, Franky; the de facto King of Soul, skeleton, and swordsman, Brook; and, more recently, former member of the seven Warlords and fish-man, Jinbei. They fight many strong pirates, marines, and monsters along the way and get ever closer to finding Gol D. Roger’s treasure.

Reviews

Needless to say, as an award-winning and record-breaking manga series, One Piece has received the highest praise for its characters, art, plot devices, humor, and length, which has no end in sight. As the highest-grossing manga of all time at an estimated twenty-one billion dollars in total revenue, the franchise is becoming more than just a manga series. One Piece is becoming something of a cultural icon. Just as the Beatles did in the world of Rock and Roll, One Piece is doing the same for Japanese manga and anime. Every year, events are held where thousands of people gather to buy merchandise, cosplay, and discuss theories about the progression of the manga’s story.
