Dragon Ball Super TV Anime Series - Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball Super is the continuation of the extremely popular Dragon Ball series by award winning manga author Akira Toriyama. Airing from 2015 to 2018. With a total of 131 Episodes, Dragon Ball Super led to the production and release of the latest Dragon Ball movie Dragon Ball Super: Broly in December 2018.

While Akira Toriyama himself was the main artist and story writer for the Dragon Ball series, from Dragon Ball Super the main artist is Toyotaro. Toyotaro receives ideas and storyboard edits from Toriyama but ultimately is the main artist for the series. The manga and anime follow slightly different stories however as the anime went ahead of the manga for a long time. Toriyama and Toei worked together to make the story for the anime.

Beerus Saga

God of Destruction Beerus awakens from a long slumber, interest piqued by a dream of the Super Saiyan God. Reporting this to his angelic retainer Whis, he goes in search of the Super Saiyan God from his dreams. Goku meanwhile is on King Kai’s planet to train. While there, Beerus and Whis arrive on King Kai’s planet and interrogate him about the Super Saiyan God. King Kai knows nothing about it, explaining that there must be some kind of mistake. Goku comes out of hiding in King Kai’s house and decides, after mistakenly using improper speech, to challenge Beerus to a sparring match. Beerus accepts and very easily knocks out a Super Saiyan 3 Goku with a tap on the shoulder. Disappointed, Beerus then makes way for Earth to find Vegeta.

On Earth it is Bulma’s birthday party and everyone has gathered to join in the celebration when the God of Destruction appears. Vegeta immediately knows who he is and is shocked to see him appear at the party. The Z Warriors try their best not to anger the god as he enjoys various different delicacies from Earth. Majin Buu however has other plans and has no intention of sharing his pudding, instead resorting to licking them all to claim his dominance over the custardy sweet treats. Beerus, absolutely livid at this turn of events assaults Buu and the other Z Warriors try in vain to help. It’s no use, even a fused Goten and Trunks are no match. Bulma suddenly approaches Beerus, berating him for ruining her party and slapping him in the face. He returns the slap in kind. Seeing this unfold send Vegeta into a primal rage, reaching levels of power previously unheard of he manages to land a number of hits on Beerus and sends him flying before being quickly disposed of himself. With Vegeta out for the count and the other Warriors providing no tangible assistance, it seems the end of Earth is at hand. Before the angry god can destroy the planet Goku appears and suggests asking Shenron about the Super Saiyan God. Shenron tells of a method of creating one involving five pure Saiyan hearts. A circle is made around Goku including Vegeta, Trunks, Goten and Gohan, but no fifth member. Videl then steps forward to join the circle announcing her pregnancy and bringing the fifth Saiyan member to the circle. Goku achieves Super Saiyan God form and begins to fight Beerus. Goku seems to be doing well until he loses his God energy and reverts back to Super Saiyan form. Beerus decides after the fight not to obliterate Earth because of the delicious food there.

Resurrection of F

Goku and Vegeta are training on Beerus’s planet while killed at the hands of a young Future Trunks, Frieza is trapped in a cocoon in hell where daily parades of singing teddy bears and cute characters torment him eternally. The Frieza army is in chaos and seeks to revive its leader and regain control of the galaxy. Sorbet, the Frieza army’s current highest ranking member goes to Earth to use the Dragon Balls to revive Frieza. They are warned that he will be revived in the same state that he died, in many pieces. They agree and scoop up the pieces and put them in a regeneration chamber. Frieza is then regenerated and trains for four months to gain more power. Following this sets a course for Earth. The Z Warriors are shocked to feel Frieza's huge ki appearing on Earth and quickly head to fight the threat. The first battle is the Z warriors versus Frieza's army, they handily beat all of them until Frieza's henchmen and Captain Ginyu in Tagoma’s body join the fight. The Z Warriors are victorious until Frieza himself joins the atack. Gohan using his Super Saiyan form attempts to stand up to Frieza but having stopped training after Majin Buu’s defeat is all but helpless against the newly powered up Frieza. Gohan powers up to release as much ki as possible for Goku to locate and teleport him and Vegeta to Earth. Goku and Frieza battle with Goku in base form and Frieza in his final form until Frieza uses his Golden Frieza form and Goku uses his Super Saiyan Blue form. Goku is losing from the start but soon realizes that Frieza is quickly losing power due to lack of familiarity with his new form. Also realizing this, Vegeta then demands they switch and he continues the fight. Goku defeats Frieza when suddenly Sorbet blasts Goku through the chest with a laser. Frieza offers Vegeta the chance to kill Goku in order to spare his own life, but Vegeta obviously refuses, tells Krillin to give Goku a senzu bean, transforms into Super Saiyan Blue form and goes on to absolutely demolish Frieza. Frieza is pushed back into final form but instead of being killed by Vegeta, decides to obliterate Earth, killing Vegeta instead. Whis creates a bubble to protect Beerus, Bulma, Jaco, Gohan, Goku, Krillin, Master Roshi, Piccolo, and Tien and tells Goku he can rewind time but only by 3 minutes. Goku quickly kills Frieza with a God Kamehameha before he can blow up the Earth.

Universe 6 Saga

Goku and Vegeta are training on Beerus’ planet with Whis when Champa, Beerus’ brother and Vados, Whis’ sister appear. Champa demands the sleeping Beerus be awoken and challenges him to a tournament, Universe 7 versus Universe 6; the stakes being Universe 7’s Earth or six of the Super Dragon Balls; Beerus agrees. Vegeta and Goku train for three years in the hyperbolic time chamber and gather a team including Piccolo, Majin Buu and One more that Beerus chooses called Monaka. Majin Buu however falls asleep during the written exam leaving the team with four fighters to five. Goku first fights Botamo whose body is impervious to damage and wins by ring out. Next is Goku versus Frost. Goku is easily able to beat Frost despite his being the alternate universe Freiza. However Frost poisons Goku and thus wins. Piccolo steps in to continue the tournament by fighting Frost. Goku tells Piccolo that he cannot win but should try to make Frost tired for Vegeta. Piccolo is also poisoned by Frost becoming dizzy and missing his attack leading to his defeat. Jaco realizes Frost’s dirty trick and outs this to everyone. Piccolo and Goku’s losses are retracted and the tournament continues with Vegeta against Frost. Vegeta easily wins and moves on to fight Auta Magetta, at first struggling due to the opponents dense metal body and hot lava attacks. With each attack Magetta increases in power and the ring gets hotter and hotter. Vegeta eventually wins by using the final flash attack and insulting Magetta forcing him to fall out of the ring. Vegeta and Cabba both are both evenly matched in the next bout into Vegeta transforms into Super Saian form, demanding Cabba do the same. Unable to transform though, Cabba is provoked by Vegeta unlocking the the form for Cabba. They fight but Cabba loses his powered up state, forfeiting the match. Vegeta does not allow it and claims he will kill Cabba if he forfeits and will destroy his planet too. Cabba transforms again and much to his surprise Vegeta transforms into Blue and knocks him out with a punch. Finally the last fighter from Universe 6 steps into the ring, Hit the infamous assassin begins his fight with Vegeta. Using time skip techniques he crushes a tired Vegeta and moves on to Goku. The battle is fierce and both fighters are exhausted having used their ultimate techniques including a Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken Kamehameha. Hit remarks he was holding back so as not to kill Goku. Goku asks if the rules can be changed to allow killing but Beerus denies the request. Goku collapses and jumps out of the ring to eliminate himself after saying they can fight another time. Monaka jumps in, landing on his head and launches a feeble punch at Hit. Realizing he is weak and harmless, Hit pretends the strike was powerful and eliminates himself. Champs is furious and about to destroy his fighters when Zeno arrives. Zeno tells everyone it was fun to watch the tournament, even though it was held without permission and that they should have another including all 12 Universes. Goku shakes Zeno’s hand much to everyone’s shock before leaving and everyone heads back to their own planet. Goku asks Hit if they can fight again and Cabba professes his admiration for Vegeta.

Copy Vegeta

On earth everyone is holding a party and they invited Monaka but for fear of outing him as a weakling, Monaka is according to Beerus, busy with work. A delivery arrives at the party full of sweets for Mr. Satan. However having joined Mr. Satan’s gym Monaka also appears from the delivery truck. Beerus is afraid that Goku will challenge him to fight and explain to everyone that Monaka is actually an amateur fighter. Suddenly Goku appears behind Beerus with instant teleportation, shocking the god of destruction. Goku obviously challenges Monaka to a fight so Beerus wears a Monaka costume and fights him instead. Somehow even with the costume ripping and seeing Monaka passed out Goku does not realize that it is in fact Beerus in disguise.

Later Goku is seen shopping and tries to teleport but fails, ending up in Bulmas bedroom, with Arale, in Korindo tower and finally on King Kai’s planet. He is sick with Ki sickness from using Kaioken in his Super Saiyan blue form.

Goten and Trunks are found in Monaka’s delivery truck freezing when they land in the planet potfue. Monaka delivers a magazine to the resident there but is held up by a space bandit called Gryll and his crew. Goten and trunks easily defeat the bandits but they manage to steal a special artifact from the resident of the planet and unlock the seal to the super water. They are absorbed by the super water and become purple copies of themselves. Goten and Trunks are struggling to fight them when Vegeta and Jaco appear having been sent to retrieve the boys by Chichi and Bulma.

Vegeta easily defeats the henchmen but is absorbed himself by the super water creating Copy Vegeta. The copy has stolen all of Vegeta’s abilities and power, resulting in Vegeta’s death soon after if the copy is not destroyed. Fusing into Gotenks the boys try to fight against Copy Vegeta but it’s no good, even in Super Saiyan 3 form. They are luckily saved from absorption by Jaco when Goku appears and tells them to go somewhere far away. Goku eventually defeats the Copy Vegeta and bandit Gryll. Once everyone is back home and safe, Future Trunks is seen exhausted and struggling against an unknown foe.

Goku Black

Still farming radishes on his family farm when Goten comes to bring him lunch. Not enjoying the farming so much and much preferring to train, Goku calls for Piccolo telling him that he wants to collect up the harvest and it can also be training. When they’re finished Goku locks on to Vegeta’s power level signature and teleports to Beerus’ planet where Vegeta is training with Whis.

Future Trunks is attacked by Goku Black, losing his mother, Future Bulma in the onslaught. His girlfriend Future Mai is also seemingly killed by a ki blast. During the ensuing assault Trunks manages to escape to the past in a time machine while Goku Black is distracted. He wakes up to Bulma and Goku standing over him. He angrily attacks Goku mistakenly thinking that he is in fact Goku Black. Everyone is surprised to hear what has happened in Trunks’ future and Goku asks Trunks to spar with him. Trunks is surprised to see how powerful Goku is; likewise Goku is surprised to see that Trunks has become this strong on his own but is still no match for Goku Black. Goku becomes excited about the prospect of fighting Goku Black at some point when suddenly a thunderstorm appears and Goku Black appears. Goku and Black fight before Black is pulled back into the time rift after destroying the “hope” time machine and trapping Trunks in the past. Bulma however still has the time machine that alternate Cell used to come to the main timeline and can repair it. The refuelling however would take up to one whole day. Trunks uses this time to visit his old teacher Gohan and his family while Goku, Whis and Beerus head to Universe 10 after realizing that Black’s ki feels similar to someone there. Goku spars with Zamasu as Whis notes the identical ki between Black and Zamasu. Checking that all the time rings are where they should be the three head back to Universe 7 to receive word that Zeno is calling for Goku. Unable to refuse the request they ask Supreme Kai to take the to Zeno, asking albeit very casually what Zeno wants, much to Whis and Supreme Kai’s dismay, Zeno states he wants a friend to play with. Goku tells him he is busy but will come back soon with an even better person to be Zeno’s friend. Goku gives Zeno a nickname and tells him to refer to him casually as Goku before receiving a special button that summons Zeno to Goku in an instant.

Goku, Vegeta and Trunks go to the future to face Black but are shocked to see Black’s Super Saiyan Rose and Future Zamasu appearing to join the battle. They evildoers are much stronger than when they fought in the present timeline and push the Z warriors to the brink of defeat when they are luckily saved by Future Yajirobe and the Earth resistance force and escape safely in the time machine. After recouping from their loss Vegeta begins training in the hyperbolic time chamber again as Goku, Whis and Beerus meet with Gowasu and Zamasu once more. Zamas seemingly fine with the Universe 7 guests, shows no sign of aggression or malcontent and accepts Beerus’ request to fight with Goku once more. Before the match begins however Beerus retracts his request and claims it’s time to sleep and that they will leave. Gowasu indulges in the tea and snacks from Universe 7 as Zamasu refuses but watches hungrily. Whis creates a barrier nearby in space to observe Zamas’ next actions. Zamasu creates an energy blade and kills Gowasu from behind. Whis reverts time by three minutes and before Zamasu can strike conjures a glove over his hand. Gowasu is confused and asks for an explanation. Supreme Kai explains that Zamasu tried to kill him, removing the glove to display Zamasu’s energy blade. Afraid of being killed and his plans not coming to fruition Zamasu launches an attack only to be stopped easily by Beerus and erased. Gowasu apologizes for his ignorance and lack of awareness with regards to Zamasu’s true intentions. With this Beerus is satisfied that Goku Black will also disappear from the future having been erased by a God of Destruction.

Back on Earth Trunks is trying to encourage Future Trunks to not give up by fighting him as Beerus and Goku crash down in between them. Beerus’ claims are doubted by Future Trunks much to his annoyment prompting Goku to return with him to the future to check. Vegeta also joins the trip and the three head back to the future. Black and Future Zamasu are still there, unaffected by Beerus erasure due to weidling the time rings. Another battle ensues in which the two Saiyans are again easily defeated. Trunks powers up to and as of yet unseen Super Saiyan form, Super Saiyan Rage and takes on the two evil gods while Goku, Vegeta and Bulma escape once more to the past. The Earth defence force and Future Mai work to keep Future Trunks alive and safe while in the present Goku learns the Evil Containment Wave from Master Roshi and Vegeta obliterates the hyperbolic time chamber in another attempt to surpass his limits. With new techniques and a supply of senzu beans they prepare to return to Future Trunks’ aid.

Future Mai leads an stealthy sniper attack on Goku Black with a special bullet given to her by Bulma. Unfortunately the bullet has little to no effect on the false Saiyan and they become the target of an energy barrage that is deflected by Future Trunks at the very last moment. Future Trunks attempts to hold off the two villains but is defeated and almost killed as Goku, Vegeta and Bulma appear once more in the time machine. Black destroys the time machine again with the intention of trapping the team in the future. Realizing the Evil Containment Wave urn was in the time machine, the plan to seal the immortal god now useless, the Saiyan duo prepare to fight. Before things get heated, Gowasu and Supreme Kai appear using the time rings and Gowasu begins to berate Future Zamasu for all the evil he has committed. The team informs him that Goku Black is in fact the Zamasu that he knew and he redirects his speech before. Zamasu fires an energy barrage at Gowasu and Supreme Kai that is blocked by Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Vegeta. With talk being useless now and Vegeta bloodthirsty and seeking revenge for the previous humiliations, he instantly powers up to Super Saiyan Blue and begins to dominate Goku Black. Black discovers that the secret to Vegeta’s power ups are his anger and harnessing his own rage develops a new energy blade attack that opens a negative energy rift in reality. From this rift he spawns multiple clones of himself that regenerate after being attacked. Goku and Vegeta are being held up by the clones while Future Trunks practices the Evil Containment Wave with the newly fixed urn. Future Zamasu is spotted heading towards them and Bulma tries to buy time by unsuccessfully flirting with Zamasu much to his disgust. Grabbing her by the collar she passes out causing Trunks to explode in anger and initiate the Evil Containment Wave. They successfully trap Zamasu in the urn but forgetting the paper seal he soon breaks free exhausted. Black senses Zamasu’s power decreasing and teleports to him closing the rift he opened, Goku and Vegeta following in turn. The two gods decide it’s time to use their final hand and use the potara earrings to form Fused Zamasu. Continuing the fight Vegeta, Goku and Trunks are all easily overwhelmed until Goku and Vegeta also fuse to make Vegito Blue. Before the final attack can be landed however Vegito runs out of energy and the fusion becomes unsustainable forcing them to split. Trunks saves the day with a spirit bomb infused sword and cleaves Zamasu in half destroying him completely.

Having defeated the mad god the team rejoices until the sky darkens and shadows of Zamasu’s face appear in the sky firing energy beams everywhere. All hope seems lost when Goku, teaching for a Senzu bean finds the button Zeno gave him in his pocket. Calling Future Zeno to the scene and asking him to erase Zamasu, Future Zeno complies erasing not only Zamasu but the entire world after the team escapes in the time machine. Whis and Beerus go back to a time before Zamasu takes the time ring in the future and properly deal with him there. Goku returns to the future that is now a void and collects the floating Future Zeno to take him to the main timeline Zeno as a playmate. Future Trunks and Future Mai then agree to move to a timeline where Zamasu never took the time ring but must live alongside another Future Trunks and Future Mai.

Universal Survival

The Universe Survival Saga is the final saga of the Dragon Ball Super anime. As Zeno previously mentioned a tournament including all 12 Universes is held with the winner receiving the super dragon balls and the losers having their universe erased. Each Universe is allowed ten fighters with the rules being no weapons, healing items or flying and disqualification for killing. The only way to defeat an opponent is by ring out. Universe 7 (Goku’s universe) enlist Goku, Vegeta, Krillin, Android 17, Android 18, Tein, Master Roshi, Gohan, Piccolo and most surprisingly they ask for Frieza to be given a 24 hour revival to compete with them providing a full resurrection as reward if they win. The team face many difficult battles including opponents with bizarre special abilities, a god of destruction candidate (Toppo), a mortal stronger than gods (Jiren) and a host of other tribulations. Through this however Gohan rediscovers his lost powers, Vegeta demonstrates Super Saiyan Blue Evolution form and Goku displays the new Ultra Instinct form in unmastered and mastered states. The Saga isn’t heavy on plot, instead following an almost typical tournament style progression with the only difference being that it is a battle royale. Universe 7 eventually wins and uses their wish to wish back all of the erased universes. Frieza is also granted resurrection for his participation and goes on to reclaim his throne as the Galactic Emperor of Universe 7.
