Synopsis
With only a few magic users in Japan, they’re a rare commodity and forced to attend one of nine magic-related schools, each of which focuses on a different aspect. Among these users is Tatsuya Shiba, a user who’s considered magically inept but manages through his unusual technical knowledge, combat abilities, and unique magical techniques, making him the “irregular” of First High. When a new exchange student named Angelina Kudo Shields arrives in Japan from USNA to study at First High, magicians around the country begin getting attacked by a mysterious assailant who leaves his victims drained of blood.
Background
The Irregular at Magic High School began as a web novel series by Tsutomu Sato that went on to be published by Dengeki Bunko as a light novel beginning in July 2011. The original light novel ended its run with its 32nd volume that was published in September 2020. There have been two sequels to the light novel including The Irregular At Magic High School Magian Company which began its run in October 2020 and New – The Irregular at Magic High School Maidens of Cygnus which will be published in 2021.
The series has a manga adaptation that began in 2013 and adapts each of the series’ story arcs, as well as a spin-off manga adaptation titled The Honor Student at Magic High School which began in June 2012. A film adaptation titled The Irregular at Magic High School The Movie: The Girl Who Calls the Stars was also released in 2017.
Three video game adaptations have also been released including the 3D fighting game The Irregular at Magic High School: Out of Order, the JRPG The Irregular at Magic High School: School Magicus Battle, and the mobile game The Irregular at Magic High School: Lost Zero.
The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc is the second season of the anime adaptation. First announced at the "Dengeki Bunko Aki no Namahoso Festival" event held in October 2019, it is being produced by 8 bit and features Risako Yoshida as director, Munemasa Nakamoto as the scriptwriter, Kana Ishida as character designer, and Taku Iwasaki as music composer. The anime was originally scheduled to begin airing in July 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It premiered in Japan on Oct. 3 on Tokyo MX, BS11, MBS, and other channels. It is being streamed in North America through Funimation.
Characters
Tatsuya Shiba (Voiced by: Yuichi Nakamura)
A first-year student at First High in Class E. Though born into a prestigious family of magicians, Tatsuya has inferior magic power. He struggles with magic tests but passes written portions with flying colors and has excellent technical skills such as CAD design.
Miyuki Shiba (Voiced by: Saori Hayami)
Miyuki is Tatsuya’s younger sister and a first-year student at First High in Class A. The heir to the Yotsuba family, she is extremely talented in magic and is one of the best cooling magicians in the world. She is beautiful and always at the top of her class. She also has a serious brother complex.
Angelina Kudo Shields (Voiced by: Yoko Hikasa)
Angelina is the leader of the USNA's magician army force known as Stars. She enrolls at First High under the pretense of studying abroad with Shizuku and transfers into Miyuki’s class.
Erika Chiba (Voiced by: Yumi Uchiyama)
Tatsuya’s classmate, Erika is the daughter of the prestigious Chiba family which is skilled in both swordsmanship and magic. She is a very skilled swordswoman and is very capable in hand-to-hand combat.
Leonhard Saijo (Voiced by: Takuma Terashima)
Tetusya’s classmate, Leonhard is the grandson of a Fortress Series modified magician and is skilled at hardening magic. Though not as skilled as Erika and Tatsuya in combat, he has outstanding physical and defensive abilities.
Mizuki Shibata (Voiced by: Satomi Sato)
Tatsuya’s classmate, Mizuki has a calm and gentle personality and is able to see invisible magical components due to her “crystal eyes.” She has almost no fighting abilities.
Mikihiko Yoshida (Voiced by: Atsushi Tamaru)
Tatsuya’s classmate, Mikihiko comes from the prestigious Yoshida family who specializes in magic dealing with spirits.
Honoka Mitsu (Voiced by: Sora Amamiya)
Miyuki’s classmate, Honoka is the second-ranked student after Miyuki and is skilled at magic that manipulates light and illusions. She has a quiet personality and has feelings for Tatsuya.
Shizuku Kitayama (Voiced by: Yuiko Tatsumi)
Miyuki’s classmate, Shizuku is the eldest daughter of the wealthy Kitayama family whose mother is an A-rank magician. She is second to Miyuki in terms of magic skills but is lacking when it comes to theory.
Mayumi Saegusa (Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa)
Mayumi is a third-year student and former student council president at First High in Class A. She is the eldest daughter of the Saegusa family which specializes in precision shooting magic. She is one of the most talented students at First High.
Mari Watanabe (Voiced by: Marina Inoue)
Mari is a third-year student and former and former chairman at First High. She is an expert in battle and possesses the secret sword handed down through the Watanabe family.
Katsuto Jumonji (Voiced by: Junichi Suwabe)
Katsuto is a third-year student and former club president of First High. He is dignified and calm and possesses outstanding magical abilities.
