The Masterpiece with 30 Million Copies in Print Returns This Summer - ‘Ushio and Tora’ TV Anime Adaptation Greenlit

An anime adaptation has been greenlit for Kazuhiro Fujita’s manga Ushio and Tora previously serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday (Shogakukan) in the ‘90s. The anime will broadcast this summer. This announcement came on Feb. 4, and along with it the official site opened.

Ushio and Tora because hugely popular with children during its serialization from 1990–1996. The series has been published as tankobon and bunko volumes and has 30 million copies in print. The series received previously an anime adaptation in the form of OVAs released in ‘92 and ‘93, but this will be the first TV anime adaptation. It’s safe to say that this announcement that comes roughly 20 years after the original manga serialization has been long-awaited by fans.

Author Kazuhiro Fujita is known for his works Karakuri Circus, Moonlight Act, and others. The popular author debuted with Ushio and Tora and his high popularity can be seen from his many accolades including winning the 37th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shonen category and winning the 28th Seiun Award in the comic category.

The main character of the story is middle school student Ushio Aotsuki. One day, he meets a large youkai that had been confined for 500 years in a cave underneath the cellar of the shrine at which his father works as a priest. Ushio removes the “Beast Spear” that had pinned down the large youkai, names it Tora, and thus begins their partnership. Before long, the two are embroiled in a grand battle with the world hanging in the balance.

The anime’s production staff is another point of attention. Directing is Satoshi Nishimura, well known for series such as the huge hit Trigun, writing the anime is Toshiki Inoue of Death Note and Chaos;Head fame, and designing the characters is Tomoko Mori whose previous work includes being the animation director on Hunter x Hunter. Producing the animation is Studio Voln and Mappa, a studio founded in 2011 that has created such hits as Kids on the Slope and Rage of Bahamut: Genesis. The masterpiece manga and elite staff make Ushio and Tora a summer 2015 anime worth waiting for.
