Background

Black Summoner started as a light novel series written by Doufu Mayoi that began publication online via the user-generated novel-publishing site Shosetsuka ni Naro in October 2014. The series was later picked up by Overlap, who began publishing the series with illustrations by Kurogin in June 2016 under their Overlap Bunko imprint. As of February 2022, 16 volumes have been published. The series has been licensed for English release in North America by J-Novel Club, who will publish the ninth volume in June 2022.

A manga adaptation with artwork by Gin Ammo began serialization in Comic Gardo magazine in January 2018. The 12th collected tankobon volume was released in February 2022. Like the light novel, the manga is also licensed for English release by J-Novel Club, who have published six volumes as of May 2022.

A TV anime adaptation was announced in February 2022. It is being produced by studio Satelight and features Yoshimasa Hiraike as director and series composer, with Miwa Oshima handling character designs, Sachiko Oohashi handling sub-character designs, Wataru Inada handling monster and prop designs, and MICHIRU and Yuria Miyazono composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is "Ataman Chu Dead End" by Retobea, and the ending theme song is “Wherever” by Minori Suzuki. The anime will premiere in Japan on July 9, 2022 on Tokyo MX and Sun TV.

Characters

Kelvin (Voiced by: Kouki Uchiyama)
A young man who is reborn in another world with powerful new abilities he acquires in exchange for memories of his previous life. Armed with a skill that lets him summon monsters under his command, he begins throwing himself into battle against powerful enemies. He is a genuine battle junkie who takes the initiative in taking on enemies stronger than himself. Due to having the rare Summoner job class, he is sought after by governments.

Efil (Voiced by: Manaka Iwami)
A blonde-haired, green-eyed half-elf girl. She was a slave in the city before being bought by Kelvin. Due to being cursed, she burns anything she touches. As a result, she was forced into slavery and has never even seen her parents. She feels extremely indebted to Kelvin, who is the first person to show her kindness.

Melfina (Voiced by: Reina Ueda)
A goddess who appears before Kelvin when he is reincarnated. Before losing his memories, Kelvin made an impassioned plea to her and she became his first follower. She acts like a guide to Kelvin, teaching him how to read his status and about jobs and skills. Due to being a god, it takes an enormous amount of MP to summon her, so Kelvin has yet to see her.

Clotho (Voiced by: Randhi)
A blue slime that Kelvin comes across in the plains near Pars, the first town he visits. After becoming a follower of Kelvin, they begin growing at a tremendous pace due to experience sharing. Although they don’t speak, they share their feelings through the “follower network” and express themselves by shaking.

Gerard (Voiced by: Yousuke Akimoto)
The leader of the knights of the ruined country Alkar located on the eastern continent. He lived a peaceful life in the countryside until his country was destroyed by an epidemic brought from the Lizea Empire on the western continent that killed his wife and children. Unable to protect his country, he became a monster who lives in an old castle, where he fights against Kelvin, whom he asks to kill him.

Sera (Voiced by: Minori Suzuki)
The beloved daughter of Demon Lord Gustav. After Gustav’s death, she and Victor are transferred to a secret hideout. Though she disguises her appearance, her true form is that of a demon with horns and wings. Perhaps due to her sheltered upbringing, she is out of touch with worldly affairs and acts a bit strange, but she is well versed in table manners and other etiquette.

Rion (Voiced by: Yume Miyamoto)
A petite reincarnated girl from Japan with short black hair. She likes to keep active and play with animals. Though reasonably level-headed, she believes biased information from manga and light novels that she read before she was reincarnated.

Ange (Voiced by: Konomi Inagaki)
A popular receptionist who works at the adventurers’ guild in Pars, the first town Kelvin visits. She doles out quests for adventurers and approves their completion. She is always concerned about Kelvin’s attempts to take on dangerous and difficult quests. Ever cheerful, she acts like a big sister to Kelvin. She is well-liked by adventurers and has many secret admirers.
