Synopsis
Terror grips Tokyo as ordinary people, possessed by demons, begin bursting into flames. It’ll take a new kind of firefighting team to tackle this threat. Enter the Special Fire Force - a newly minted, rag-tag team of firefighters assembled to take on spontaneous combustion wherever it occurs. The newest member of the team, Shinra Kusakabe, is a pyrokinetic who can run with superhuman speed. Can he and the rest of the Fire Force track down the source of this strange phenomenon plaguing the city or will it be reduced to ashes first?
Background
Fire Force began as a manga by Atsushi Ohkubo that began serialization in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine in September 2015. As of April 2019, 16 collected tankobon volumes have been published.
An anime adaptation is set to premiere in Japan in July 2019. It is being directed by Yuki Yase with scripts by Yamato Haishima, character designs by Hideyuki Morioka, and production by David Production. The anime will run during the Super Animeism programming block on TBS stations. The anime will be available internationally through FUNimation Entertainment.
Characters
Shinra Kusakabe (Voiced by: Gakuto Kajiwara)
A second-class firefighter assigned to Special Fire Force Company 8, Shinra is a 17 year old with spiky short black hair and sanpaku eyes. He is a third generation pyrokinetic who can emit fire from his legs for a wide range of uses including offense, defense, and agility.
Arthur Boyle (Voiced by: Yusuke Kobayashi)
A member of Company 8 who joins just after Shinra, Arthur is a 17-year-old second-class firefighter. Since childhood he has wanted to fight to protect people and thinks highly of himself, referring to himself as a knight. Unlike the others he doesn’t wear a helmet because it goes against his knightly image.
Akitaru Obi (Voiced by: Kazuya Nakai)
The captain of Company 8, Akitaru is 31 and used to be a regular firefighter. Because he doesn’t have any special powers he relies on his physical strength and honed skills in firefighting and rescue. He loves weight training and can be found in the gym during his free time.
Takehisa Hinawa (Voiced by: Kenichi Suzumura)
A lieutenant in Company 8, Takahisa is 28 and has a history in the military, similarly to Maki. He is a second generation pyrokinetic who can manipulate the explosive power of firearms and ballistics.
Maki Oze (Voiced by: Saeko Kamijo)
A first-class firefighter attached to Company 8, Maki is 19 and has long black hair which she wears in a ponytail. A second generation pyrokinetic, she can manipulate large blazes and often uses her power to craft two small mascot-like creatures she names Meramera and Pusupusu.
Iris (Voiced by: M.A.O)
A 16-year-old nun assigned to Company 8, Iris’s role in the company is to pray for the souls of those who are possessed by demons and spontaneously combust, becoming Infernals. She leaves the firefighting and rescuing to the other members of the company.
Leonard Burns (Voiced by: Taiten Kusunoki)
The captain of Company 1, Leonard is 50 and a third generation pyrokinetic who possesses an inner fire like that of a furnace that gives him the power to greatly enhance his abilities. He wears an eyepatch over his right eye.
Karim Fulham (Voiced by: Kazuyuki Okitsu)
A lieutenant in Company 1 who is also a priest, Karim is 22 and a second generation pyrokinetic who can freeze Infernals using “Thermoacoustic Refrigeration.” He has a strange way of speaking and can seem aloof, but he cares about his comrades.
Foien Li (Voiced by: Satoshi Hino)
A lieutenant in Company 1 who is also a priest, Foien is gentle-hearted and dislikes combat.
Tamaki Kotatsu (Voiced by: Aoi Yuki)
Previously a member of Company 1, Tamaki is 17 and has long black hair that she wears in twintails. She is assigned indefinitely to Company 8 for training. She is a third generation pyrokinetic and is able to manifest flaming cat ears, a tail, and claws, making her resemble a nekomata. She has a talent for getting herself into obscene situations.
Princess Hibana (Voiced by: Lynn)
Princess Hibana is the 20-year-old captain of Company 5 who has the backing of Haijima Industries. She can attack using flower-shaped fire, and like Iris she grew up in a monastery.
Joker (Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda)
A mysterious man, “Joker” is a moniker given to him by the Special Fire Force team investigating him. His real name is unknown. He has the pyrokinetic ability to manipulate flames and cigarette smoke into playing card suits and other shapes, though which generation he is is unknown.
Victor Licht (Voiced by: Daisuke Sakaguchi)
After skipping a grade to enter university and graduating at the top of his class, Victor began working for Haijima Industries as a researcher focusing on the applied science of combustion and is subsequently enlisted to join Company 8. However, his motives and true intentions are a mystery.
Tomoaki Maeno (Voiced by: Konro Sagamiya)
A lieutenant in Company 7 who serves under Captain Benimaru Shinmon.
Rekka Hoshimiya (Voiced by: Tomokazu Seki)
A lieutenant in Company 1 who is also a priest, Rekka is a third generation pyrokinetic with the ability to shoot fire from his fists.
Takeru Noto (Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi)
A member of Company 2, Takeru comes from a family of potato farmers and is a third generation pyrokinetic with the ability to fire flames like a launcher. His nickname is “Juggernaut.”
Toru Kishiri (Voiced by: Kengo Kawanishi)
A member of Company 5, Toru has an eccentric personality and is a third generation pyrokinetic with an ability called “Backdraft Bubblish Gum” which allows him to fill up chewing gum bubbles with flammable gas that explodes on command.
Benimaru Shinmon (Voiced by: Mamoru Miyano)
The captain of Company 7, Benimaru is both a second and third generation pyrokinetic and is regarded as the strongest firefighter in the Special Fire Force. He is nicknamed “Asakusa’s King of Destruction” for his propensity to destroy buildings in Asakusa while fighting Infernals.
