Synopsis

One day, a young man is killed in a car accident only to be reincarnated in another world…as a sword! Now a sentient weapon, he begins working hard to acquire skills, all the while dreaming of meeting someone who can wield him. One day, he accidently enters a forest that absorbs magic and is unable to move. There, he meets Fran, a black cat slave girl. When she is attacked by a huge demonic beast, she finds her life in danger and reaches for the sword, using its power to escape. She names the sword Master and becomes its official wielder. Now adventurers, the two set out on quests while honing their skills, with Fran determined to find a way to help her tribe evolve. Their great adventure is about to begin!

Background

Reincarnated as a Sword started as a light novel series written by Yuu Tanaka and illustrated by Llo that began serialization on the user-generated novel publishing website Shosetsuka ni Naro in October 2015. The following year, it was picked up by Micro Magazine, who began publishing it under their GC Novels imprint. As of March 2022, 13 volumes have been published. The series is also licensed for English release through Seven Seas Entertainment, who are publishing it both digitally and in print and have released up through volume 10 as of September 2020.

A manga adaptation with artwork by Tomowo Maruyamawa was serialized in Gentosha's Denshi Birz magazine from December 2016 to January 2018, after which it transferred to Comic Boost. Eleven collected tankobon volumes have been published under the Birz Comics imprint as of March 2022. A spin-off manga written by series creator Yuu Tanaka and illustrated by Hinako Inoue titled Reincarnated as a Sword: Another Wish has been serialized on Micro Magazine's Comic Ride website since June 2020 and has been published in four tankobon volumes as of March 2022. Both manga are also available in English through Seven Seas Entertainment.

A TV anime adaptation was announced in September 2021 with the 12th volume of the light novel. It is being produced by C2C and features Shinji Ishihira as director and Kazunobu Shimizu as assistant director, with Takahiro Nagano handling series composition and scripts, Atsuko Saito as character designer and chief animation director, Ryo Haga as the main animator, and Yasuharu Takanashi as music composer. The anime’s opening theme song is “Tensei Shitara Ken Deshita” by Kishida Kyoudan & the Akeboshi Rockets, and the ending theme song is “more<STRONGLY” by Maon Kurosaki. The anime will begin broadcasting in Japan on Oct. 5, 2022, on Tokyo MX and ABC TV, and episodes will debut a week early through the ABEMA streaming service starting on Sep. 28.

Characters

Master (Voiced by: Shinichiro Miki)
He is reincarnated as a sword after dying in a traffic accident. As a sentient weapon, he is able to absorb magical stones of defeated beasts and feed on their skills. He can move freely using telekinesis and is even a skilled cook. He treats Fran as if she were his daughter.

Fran (Voiced by: Ai Kakuma)
Fran is a young girl of the black cat tribe. She set out on a journey with her parents to find clues to help the evolution of her tribe, but her parents died, leaving her all alone, and she was captured by slavers. She became a nameless slave until meeting and joining Master.

Amanda (Voiced by: Ami Koshimizu)
Amanda is a half-elf Rank A adventurer who goes by the nickname “Kishimojin.” She is the ace of the Alessa Adventurers Guild and exterminates her enemies using her whip and storm magic, but she also has a soft spot for children and is fond of Fran, whom she struggles to have call her “Mama.” She also runs an orphanage.

Klimt (Voiced by: Wataru Hatano)
Klimt is the guildmaster of the Alessa Adventurers Guild. Though suspicious of Fran, he recognizes her abilities. He is overly serious and always worried about something, but he is highly skilled in a crisis situation and is able to make quick decisions on the fly.
