Synopsis

Sarasa is a novice alchemist who grew up in an orphanage and dreams of opening her own shop just like her late parents. As a gift for graduating from an alchemy training school, her teacher Ophelia gives her an empty house in a remote village. Excited to see her dream come true sooner than she had anticipated, Sarasa heads to the village, but what awaits her is a house that’s totally run down! With her wealth of knowledge, high magical abilities, and sword skills she has honed, Sarasa’s struggles in a strange land are about to begin.

Background

Management of Novice Alchemist began as a light novel series written by Mizuho Itsuki and illustrated by Fuumi that was first published to the user-generated novel publishing website Shosetsuka ni Naro beginning in November 2018. The following year, it was acquired by Fujimi Shobo who began publishing it under their Fujimi Fantasia Bunko imprint in September 2019. As of September 2021, five volumes have been published. A web version is also being published through Kadokawa’s Kakuyomu website.

A manga adaptation with art by kirero began serialization on Kill Time Communication's Comic Valkyrie website in December 2020. As of April 2022, it has been published in two collected tankobon volumes.

A TV anime adaptation was announced in September 2021. It is being produced by ENGI and features Hiroshi Ikehata as director, with Shigeru Murakoshi handling series composition, Yosuke Ito as character designer and chief animation director along with Shinpei Koikawa, and Harumi Fuuki who is composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is “Hajimaru Welcome” by Aguri Onishi, and the ending theme song is “Fine Days” by Nanaka Suwa. The anime will premiere in Japan on Oct. 3, 2022 on Tokyo MX, AT-X, KBS Kyoto, Sun TV, and BS-NTV.

Characters

Sarasa Ford (Voiced by: Kanon Takao)
Sarasa is a novice alchemist. Though a recent graduate, she decided to open an alchemy shop. She is skilled in both magic and sword fighting, but isn’t very good at socializing. She hopes to help people in the village using alchemy. After her parents, who ran a business, died when she was young, she went to an orphanage to study and went on to higher education.

Rorea (Voiced by: Hina Kino)
Rorea is the daughter of the owner of a general store in Yokku Village. She is deeply fascinated by Sarasa, who travels to their remote neck of the woods. She is obedient and hardworking. Due to her parents’ schooling, she is able to read, write, and do math. Among the residents of the village, she is an intellectual. She becomes an employee at Sarasa’s shop. She is also in charge of cooking after realizing how subpar Sarasa’s cooking skills are.

Iris Lotze (Voiced by: Saori Onishi)
Iris is a collector. Though she is sincere and honest, she’s also unlucky and is the type to carelessly get roped into trouble. She is reasonably skilled with a sword. Her life was saved by Sarasa’s treatment, but she’s now in a lot of debt. She lodges on the second floor of Sarasa’s shop together with Kate.

Kate Starven (Voiced by: Nanaka Suwa)
Kate is a collector and is Iris’ childhood friend and companion. She is a hard worker who is pushed around by Iris. She is good at dealing with whatever comes her way and is a skilled archer. Kate is the reason she and Iris are able to do what they do as collectors. She also helps Iris in paying off her debt.

Ophelia Millis (Voiced by: Mitsuki Saiga)
Ophelia is one of only a few master class alchemists and was Sarasa’s teacher. She runs an alchemy shop in the royal capital. She hired Sarasa, who had just enrolled at an alchemist training school, as a part-timer and taught her the ropes.

Maria (Voiced by: Ami Koshimizu)
Maria is an employee at Ophelia’s shop. She also takes care of Ophelia’s personal needs. She is concerned about Sarasa.
