Leiji Matsumoto Highly Praises “Captain Harlock” Concept Room at Hotel in Odaiba

On Sept. 7, the talked about CG anime film Captain Harlock will begin screening in Japan. To commemorate this, a room at the Grand Pacific Le Daiba hotel in Odaiba has been redecorated in the image of the world of Captain Harlock. This concept room is now open for a limited time. On July 18, an opening ceremony was held to commemorate the room. At this ceremony, Leiji Matsumoto, the original creator of the series, went on stage and celebrated.

One of the highlights of the concept room is a reproduction of Captain Harlock’s captain’s chair. Other special items have also been set throughout the room. The finely detailed atmosphere of the room is fully realized, with the room having a feel similar to embarking with Captain Harlock and the rest on the Arcadia.

At the opening event, Matsumoto appeared draped in Harlock’s cloak. It was a wonderful scene as Matsumoto signed the wall inside the hotel room and sat in the captain’s chair. “It has a wonderful feeling to it. [While pointing at the captain’s chair] I want to make one in my house as well,” commented Matsumoto, who had never experienced a concept room before.

When asked about what points in the room he was pleased with, he pointed to the wall on which all of the crew members were drawn and answered, “The wall painting. I couldn’t possibly make that. After that, this chair [the captain’s chair].” In response to a question regarding there being a current flood of females to reserve the room, Matsumoto showed unexpected delight: “I’m happy about it. I wasn’t aware [of the large amount of female fans], but I definitely want them to stay the night here.”

Matsumoto then gave a message not just to the fans gathered there, but to females and the young generation: “Even though Harlock wears a skull, he is not scary. So I want people to be worry free even at night and have sweet dreams. I think people will have fun dreams in which the illusionary Arcadia crosses into the real world.” Matsumoto went on to share his hopes and outlook for the series: “This was my first 3D CG animation work, so I am extremely pleased with it. This work is also important for the series’ reboot from here on. It is a commemorative work.”

The Captain Harlock concept room will be open for five months from July 20 to Dec. 20.
A one-night stay in the room will cost 15,000 yen per person for two people and 14,000 yen per person for three people.
