A new anime coming in January 2016 has been announced from Kyoto Animation, the studio that has given the world such massive hits as K-On!, Free!, and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, among others. The anime is based on Myriad Colors Phantom World, a school fantasy novel series published by KA Esuma Bunko. Broadcasts will begin early next year in January on ABC, Tokyo MX, TV Aichi, and BS11. It’s likely to become a standout anime of the season.
The original novel series Myriad Colors Phantom World is authored by Soichiro Hatano and illustrated by Shirabi. The first volume was published in December 2013, and volume 2 will be released in Japan at the end of the month on Oct. 30. It is published by a light novel label that brings to the world content from Kyoto Animation other than just anime.
The characters in the lineup are fully unique and include main character and freshman Haruhiko Ichijo who has an extensive amount of knowledge and passionately talks about useless trivia, a beautiful ponytailed girl named Mai Kawakami, a rich girl named Reina Izumi, a cool beauty named Koito Minase, a fairy named Ruru, elementary school student Kurumi Kumamakura, Haruhiko’s classmate Shosuke Morohashi, and teacher Arisu Himeno. Performing as these characters in the anime is a group of popular voice stars that includes Hiro Shimono, Sumire Uesaka, Saori Hayami, Maaya Uchida, Azusa Tadokoro, Misaki Kuno, and Kikuko Inoue.
The staff is also noteworthy. Appointed as director is hitmaker Tatsuya Ishihara of such series as Air, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and Sound! Euphonium to name a few. Other talented staff members include Fumihiko Shimo as series composer, Kazumi Ikeda of Sound! Euphonium fame as character designer, and Mikiko Watanabe as art director. Both the staff and cast give plenty to look forward to.
