It has been announced that the popular anime Samurai 7, the TV broadcast to which began in 2004, will be becoming a musical over 10 years after the announcement of the anime. Performances will begin in January 2015 at the Galaxy Theatre in Shinagawa, Tokyo.
Samurai 7 is a grand sci-fi anime based on Japanese film director legend Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece Seven Samurai. The anime is produced by Gonzo, and the wonderful staff––which includes Space Runaway Ideon’s Toshifumi Takizawa as director and Armored Trooper Votoms’s Ryousuke Takahashi as production assistant––has drawn attention.
The stage play adaptation of the series was performed at Shinjuku Koma Theater in November 2008. In 2010 and 2012, encores were performed at the Aoyama Theatre to great acclaim. Now, all eyes are on the fact that the series is becoming a new musical. From a movie to a TV anime to a stage play and now to a musical - the flow of accomplishment of the series’ varied transformations is likely deeply moving to fans. Similarly to the anime, wonderful staff have lined up for the musical. First, producing the musical is Nelke Planning, which has a solid reputation in the area of stage play planning and production. Directing the musical is Yukio Ueshima who is well known for the huge hit musical The Prince of Tennis among others. In charge of the music is the well-known Toshihiko Sahashi from Full Metal Panic! and Mobile Suit Gundam Seed. Because Sahashi is known for the breadth of his music, it can be said that he is the perfect choice for Samurai 7.
The anime Samurai 7 is a sci-fi adventure drama boldy arranged around Seven Samurai. It takes place in a world after a galactic war and is crammed with various ideas in regard to the simple good vs. evil story cliche. The anime’s impactful visuals are also a strong point.
