Even with a career that spans back to her junior high school days, veteran voice actress and ani-song pop star Maaya Sakamoto still manages to break new ground.

Old-school otaku may remember her role as Hitomi Kanazaki from the 1996 anime “The Vision of Escaflowne” where she also sung the opening theme written by top composer Yoko Kanno. The two recently teamed up again on “More Than Words,” the theme for the theatrical OVA “Code Geass: Akito the Exiled.”

Fresh off her recording for “Securial,” a collaboration track with Capcom’s massively popular “Monster Hunter Frontier G,” Sakamoto is back for the opening track to next season’s TV anime “World Conquest: Stratagem Zvezda” with an unexpected partner–the band apart, an indie rock group. Details about the show are under wraps, but we do know that it’s being helmed by “Blue Exorcist” director Tensai Okamura with scripts by Meteor Hoshizora from the game company Type-Moon.

We’ll have to wait until January to see what the show is all about, and hear how Sakamoto’s ethereal vocals layer over the band apart’s syncopated beats.
