Live-Action Movie Adaptation of “I Have Few Friends” Confirmed, Cast Info Revealed

Kōji Seto and Kii Kitano from the live-action adaptation of “I Have Few Friends”

Yomi Hirasaka’s light novel series I Have Few Friends (MF Bunko J / Media Factory) is becoming a live-action movie. The cast for the movie, announced at the same time, includes Kōji Seto as main character Hasegawa Kodaka and Kii Kitano as Mikazuki Yozora. Since the original work has over 5.5 million copies in print and includes two TV anime adaptations, many eyes are fixed on this live-action movie. The release date is planned for spring 2014.

The movie will be set in the same world as the original work, but will feature an original story to fit the real-world premise. Using the light novels as a guide, a story filled with answers to fastball questions such as “What is a friend?” will unfold.

For the role, Seto is getting fully into character by dying his hair blonde. On the other hand, Kitano is putting her stamp on the role of Yozora with her trademark fresh smile. She will portray the ill-mannered, sadistic Yozora in a refreshing way. Director Takurō Oikawa has been reading through the original work and it seems he has deep impressions of it. He is challenging himself by adapting this series into a live-action movie while also being the scriptwriter of the movie.

I Have Few Friends is a popular work that has captured the hearts of readers with its novel setting depicting the activities of a club for making friends and its passionate characters. Since the first volume was published in 2009, it has been dragging the light novel world along with it. TV anime adaptations were broadcast in 2011 and earlier this year, which served to widen the series’ fanbase even more. The series has also been developed into various other mediums, including manga and video games.

St. Chronica Academy second year student Hasegawa Kodaka is a half-blonde, shy young man with unfriendly looking eyes who transferred schools three months prior. Due to people always misunderstanding him, he has no friends. One day after school just before summer break, he meets a girl named Mikazuki Yozora who is standing in a classroom by herself talking to an imaginary friend. Due to her rough personality and foul mouth, she too has no friends.

–– Story ––
Kodaka, who truthfully wants friends, and Yozora, who doesn’t want to be thought of as a mean girl with no friends. In order to realize their goal of having friends, they create a club called the Neighbors Club at the suggestion of Yozora in order to do just that! Kodaka then begins his bewildering club activities, and, unexpectedly, others start applying to the club as well. These oddball characters include the well-endowed Kashiwazaki Sena, the perverted genius inventor Shiguma Rika, and Kusunoki Yukimura, who crossdresses as a girl in order to realize what is means to be a true man. This club of extremely peculiar characters is rounded out with Kodaka’s younger sister Hasegawa Kobato and the club’s advisor, 10-year-old Sister Takayama Maria. Lacking a cohesive personality, the club begins with everyone doing what they please, and the club members, though they had no place to belong at school or at home, create a wonderful and comfortable place for themselves.

Then one day, it is proposed that they play a virtual game that Rikka has. In the virtual world, they could live out their dream lives as they please. When they all attach game machines to their heads, the real world and the virtual world become switched! The school life they had imagined, a school in which they have friends, their ideal world becomes real...

However, one of them doesn’t realize that the excessively sweet game has ended and they have returned to their normal lives. Due to this person’s extremely strong fantasy, reality starts to become distorted! The world then changes to a one running wild with inflated fantasies. Even though it’s the real world which they loathe, in order to protect what is important to them, and to believe in themselves, they decide to bring an end to the game.
