OtapediaPS3 Games - Attack on Titan

The Attack on Titan franchise has one Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) game to date called Attack on Titan. In the European release the title was renamed as Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom (Europe). This title would later be ported to the PlayStation 4 and the handheld console PlayStation Vita. The sequel to the game would also later be released on the PlayStation 4 console.

Attack on Titan PS3

‘Attack on Titan’ is a single player action, hack and slash video game which can also be played online. The game is based on the internationally popular Japanese manga series Attack on Titan, both written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama. It was released on February 18, 2016, in Japan for Playstation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. Subsequent versions for Xbox and Microsoft were later released followed by the Western version released in North America and Europe in August 2016. The game’s sequel, ‘Attack on Titans 2’ was released worldwide on March 20, 2018, on the next generation PlayStation 4 console.

The game was developed by Omega Force and published by Koei Tecmo. The game captures the brutal essence and the fast paced action of the anime, with a mixture of the manga story and an ending completely original to the game.

Plot

The game is based on the ‘Attack on Titan’ manga and retells the first four arcs of the series including; Fall of Shiganshina arc, Battle of Trost District arc, 104th Training Corps arc and The Female Titan arc. It is Chapters 1 through to 34 and also covered by the first season of the anime. A few original twists can also be experienced in the video game.

Gameplay

The fights are in a violent and relentless battlefield where the situation constantly changes. Every strategic decision the player makes will link directly to new and exciting action. The roughly 15 hour campaign hits all the essential plot events of the first season of the anime. Eren Jaeger and his crew joins the military to fight off the Titans and take on new threats.

The player manages the combo of swinging, targeting and slashing the back of Titans necks by controlling the “Omni-directional mobility gear” created specifically for battle with the Titans. The player can freely roam and practically fly through the map, hunt down targets and execute them quickly. Engagements are quick, however, it does not mean that fighting the Titans are easy. Each Titan’s type presents its own challenge, whether it is a large crawling Titan or a boss Titan with a hard neck. The diversity keeps the more standard hunting mission interesting and keeps the game unexpected and exciting for the players.

Playable Characters

There is a total of ten playable characters from the series in this game, which are;

  • Eren Jaeger - The main protagonist of the series.
  • Mikasa Ackermann - Eren’s adopted sister who joined the 104th Training Corps with Eren.
  • Armin Arlert - Eren’s childhood friend who also joined the 104th Training Corps.
  • Jean Kirschtein - Hot-headed character with opposing ideals to Eren.
  • Connie Springer - Comes from the Ragako District of Wall Rose. Joined Eren in the Survey Corps.
  • Sasha Braus - Hunter from the mountainous Dauper District. Skilled with a bow but has issues with authority.
  • Krista Lenz - A sweet girl that joined the 104th Training Corps, presumably as self punishment.
  • Levi Ackermann - Head of an elite squad in the Survey Corp.
  • Hange Zoe - A scientist that studied the Titans and is a Survey Corps veteran. Leader of 4th Squad.
  • Erwin Smith - Commander of the Survey Corps.

Each of the ten playable characters have their own combat style which reflects their personality. For example, Armin Arlert is a better tactician than a fighter, hence, he has the ability to send members of his team to attack a point for him. On the other hand, Levi Ackermann is one of the strongest fighters, hence, he can perform a unique combo of attacks after his first hit. This specialisation makes the characters more authentic.
