New Tokyo Ghoul Series Serialization Starts in Weekly Young Jump, Second Season TV Anime Scheduled for January 2015

The manga and TV anime held dear by so many fans, Tokyo Ghoul, met its grand finale in September. However, new developments are already coming as new series start in both manga and anime.

Firstly, Tokyo Ghoul: Re begins serializing in Issue 46 of Weekly Young Jump, which is to be released on Oct. 16. This is the sequel of Tokyo Ghoul, which has more than 8.4 million volumes sold in total. Even though it’s a sequel, it will feature a new story different from the original, including a new protagonist, making it quite an ambitious piece. As such, this new challenge by author Sui Ishida is gathering considerable attention.

Furthermore, new developments are upcoming for the anime adaptation as well. After receiving good ratings during its broadcast period from July to September 2014, it was decided that a second season would start broadcasting from January 2015. Continuing from the previous series, sitting in the director’s chair is Shuhei Morita, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, and Natsuki Hanae, Sora Amamiya, Kana Hanazawa, Mamoru Miyano are staying on cast.

The story will be a big surprise, as it follows an original scenario by Sui Ishida, the author of the original manga. This means another Tokyo Ghoul different from both Tokyo Ghoul and Tokyo Ghoul: Re will be opening its curtains soon. Developments not to be missed are joining the expanding world of the series this October and January 2015.

Tokyo Ghoul takes place in a Tokyo where man-eating ghouls have appeared. Kaneki, an ordinary college student gets pulled into a miserable destiny after being attacked by a ghoul named Rize. The original manga was serialized in Weekly Young Jump (Shueisha) from 2011, and it became immensely popular. Although it was concluded in September, new stories will be unfolding soon.

Comment from director Shuhei Morita:
“I’m happy the day of announcing the second season of Tokyo Ghoul has come! Our mission is to make a Tokyo Ghoul anime our audience will enjoy even more than the first season. Please look forward to the upcoming second season!”
