On May 1, a trailer and information on the theme song of the two-part movie sequel Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire (release date: 8/01) and Rurouni Kenshin: The End of a Legend (release date: 9/13) was released.
The trailer, of course, has action scenes highly anticipated by fans of the original work, like Kenshin Himura (played by Takeru Satoh) vs. Makoto Shishio (played by Tatsuya Fujiwara) vs. Aoshi Shinomori (played by Yusuke Iseya), as well as reveals the whole story of Purgatory, the battleship that serves as the scene for the climax. It took five months to build the Purgatory seen in the film. It is 20 meters wide and 120 meters long. It is one of the largest sets ever used in Japanese filmmaking, so there is no doubt that moviegoers will be able to get a sense of its behemoth scale.
Also announced to be continuing from the last movie to be in charge of the theme song for this sequel is rock band One OK Rock which is hugely popular among young people in Japan and abroad, having held shows in 12 countries including France, Italy, and Taiwan!
The trailer also makes use of a portion of the theme song “Mighty Long Fall.” The song was written specifically for the movie and is a dramatic number appropriate for the work’s grand scale. Vocalist Taka commented on his thoughts on the song, saying, “We’re very glad to be continuing on from the last work to be a part of this movie. We don’t feel that we’re outsiders when it comes to this movie anymore; we’ve been given the opportunity to make this movie together. Contemplating on such feelings has made this a profound movie! This time as well, we went through trial and error to try and make a fitting theme song for the movie in our own way. There is a humongous different in the scale and action of this movie compared to the last, and we will be intense and reveal a new One OK Rock so that we don’t fall behind!” Definitely check out the emotionally charged “Mighty Long Fall.”
