Mages Inc. announced the production and release of the Divergence Meter clock, based on an item appearing in the popular game Steins;Gate from the Science Adventure series in a collaboration project with Asahi Living. The Divergence Meter clock will be sold from Oct. 1, 2015 in a limited number.
30 limited edition Steins;Gate x Asahi Living Divergence Meter clocks to be released!
The Steins;Gate project is welcoming its fifth anniversary with the legitimate sequel Steins;Gate 0 scheduled to release on Nov. 19 and the rebroadcast of the TV anime adaptation. Asahi Living is joining hands with the series and has decided on creating a clock based on the Divergence Meter, an item appearing in the game, to be sold in a limited number from Oct. 1 as a concept project.
Regarding the collaboration project, the news of adding the Divergence Meter to the Steins;Gate collaboration lease inventory as standard equipment on Aug. 6 has created a huge sensation among fans. This was the reason the Divergence Meter could become reality not only as standard equipment among the official collaboration lease articles, but also as the Divergence Meter clock so that more people could enjoy it. Since Nixie tubes are hard to get everywhere in the world, only a limited number of 30 will be made, making these Divergence Meter clocks highly precious.
The prototype of the clock is currently making its debut in the Steins;Gate collaboration cafe presently open in Kobe Anime Street. Feel free to check it out on the spot.

Divergence Meter Clock Specifications
Besides the obvious clock and calendar features, it also has a “β World Line Readings Mode” and a “Steins;Gate World Line Display Mode” installed. It emulates the size and weight of the omnipresent Divergence Meter. When it reaches the configured time, the numbers in the Nixie tubes turn at high speed until they settle down one by one, giving you a feeling of how the World Lines change every second. What’s more, each clock comes with a serial number and wrapped in an original outer box.
*Fluctuations in World Lines can’t be measured with this device.
Comments Regarding Production of the Divergence Meter Clocks
Comment from Series Producer Tatsuya Matsubara:
“Our making of the Divergence Meter clock caused us to create new settings, etc. on the back that don’t appear in the game. According to the settings, the Divergence Meter itself is supposed to be something made of components you could easily buy in a parts shop in Akihabara, and I designed it while remembering back on the gadget-crazy kid I was. Although getting my hands on Nixie tubes was no easy task (laughs).”
Comment from a Representative of Asahi Living:
“We got to work to recreate it as standard equipment for Steins;Gate official collaboration lease articles using Nixie tubes, but the voices of fans at the event told us that making it only for a collaboration lease won’t suffice. We wanted to respond to their expectations with something, so we imposed it on Kiban Honpo and with their help we were able to make it come true.”
Comment from Production Supervisor & Nixie Tube Supplier Kiban Honpo:
“Nixie tubes mesmerised many fans with their magical glow, but their manufacture was suspended more than 10 years ago throughout the world, and there is no more to be found in the warehouses of former manufacturers; there is only a small supply that remains stocked up on the market. But since we wanted to respond to the enthusiasm of Mages, Asahi Living, and those many fans, we searched throughout the world, and although there are only a few, it’s still enough to be made into a product. Since this will be the last in the line of Nixie tube products, we want to make something that can satisfy the fans.”
What’s a Divergence Meter?
The Divergence Meter is a future gadget appearing in Steins;Gate that is capable of measuring and displaying the fluctuation rates in Word Lines. Among the items appearing in the game/anime, the Divergence Meter has an especially high number of fans.
What’s a Nixie tube?
Nixie tubes were developed during the 1950s as a means of numeric indication. They emits light on the same principle as neon lights. Each tube has plates (cathodes) showing the numerals 0-9 inside, and the appropriate plate is made to glow by applying a voltage of about 170V. Although its voltage is very high compared to the usual 3.3-5V seen in electric circuits, it has a low electric current of less than 10mA, resulting in an electronic consumption of less than 1.7W, which actually equals to 1/50th of a 100W lightbulb.
The bulbs were mostly used in measuring instruments, and as such they hold a high nostalgic value to electronics designers of the old days. In the 1970s, Nixie tubes relieved their leading seat to LED technology, marking the end of a short golden era. Although the production for maintenance purposes continued in smaller numbers for a while, all makers discontinued production by 1990, declaring Nixie tubes an EOL product.
Afterward, the makers’ stocks ran out, and there were only those left sleeping in warehouses awaiting distribution, but even those were exhausted, making it hard to amass a large amount. Even if there are only a few left, their faint, calming light continues to fascinate many fans.
