“Ajin: Demi-Human” TV Series to Premiere in January 2016; Worldwide Streaming Through Netflix

Ajin: Demi-Human, currently serialized in Kodansha’s Good! Afternoon, has become talked about for the announcement that it will be getting a trilogy of animated movies. The first, titled Ajin: Shodo (Ajin: Impulse), is slated for release in Japan in November. Because the original manga is such a big hit, a lot of interest is building for this theatrical anime. And now production on a new TV anime for the series has been revealed. It will more deeply express the world of the animated movies.

The TV series will premiere shortly after the release of the first movie, in January 2016. It will broadcast on MBS, TBS, CBC, and other networks. The anime will also be available to stream through Netflix, which recently made headlines when the service became available in Japan. However, the anime isn’t stopping with Japan, it will be available worldwide. It seems it will be one of Netflix’s killer titles. Episodes will be available to stream worldwide on Netflix three days after their TV broadcast date. Even for Netflix, this novel idea of streaming a new Japanese anime series worldwide simultaneously is a first.

Japanese anime is treated as essential content on Netflix. Even with Ajin, Netflix negotiates directly with Japanese creators and studios beginning from the anime planning stage to arrive at the stage of being able to stream it. Netflix began service in Japan earlier this month, and Netflix’s Chief Streaming and Partnerships Officer Greg Peters has stated that anime is one of the service’s most important types of content. It seems likely that with the distribution of this big title Netflix will strengthen its presence in Japan.

Ajin is originally a hugely popular space action manga that has over 3.2 million copies in print. The series depicts full-blown action and elaborate psychological aspects through its story that follows a new type of immortal human called Ajin, who fight against the Japanese government that hunts them down.

Mamoru Miyano voices main character Kei Nagai. Hiroyuki Seshita is chief director and Hiroaki Ando is director. The anime is being produced by Polygon Pictures.
