I Want This! FC Mobile, the Portable Game Console for Famicom Cartridges Is Too Awesome

Among the generation of 30-40 year olds, it was probably more common to gather a few friends and have wild fun with the Family Computer (Famicom) during their childhood years rather than play outside. I remember it cost ¥14,800 when it released in 1983, while the price of one cartridge could range from about ¥3,800 to roughly ¥5,000.

Around that time, children would get a monthly allowance of ¥100 to ¥1,000 in the countryside I grew up. Such an amount would be unimaginable today, but at the time, cheap candy shops were still at large. If you had ¥100, you could buy 10 sweets or maybe two cute erasers at the stationery shop.

In my case, I would get ¥100 in my first year of elementary school and ¥500 when I was in sixth grade. As soon as I got my allowance, I would run to the nearby stationery shop and buy
the things I wanted: Kneaded erasers (scented, too!), notebooks with Kero Kero Keroppi, Minna no Tabo, and Hangyodon on them, pencils, some of this and that… My parents would often get angry at me for wasting my money on such things.

In such an era, even the cartridges weren’t something you would easily get, much less the Famicom itself, so naturally there were kids who would ask for the Famicom for Christmas and buy the cartridges from their pocket money or get them as a New Year’s gift. There were even kids who would only buy the cartridges and crash at a friend’s house who had the console.

Acquiring the Famicom and the cartridges cost so much effort it’s hard to part with them. And even if you can’t use the console anymore, it’s still hard to let go of the cartridges because of their sentimental value. I am one of those people. Now, Nissen has introduced a product on Twitter that might pique such people’s interest, and it’s provoking attention.

The product Nissen introduced is none other than the FC Mobile portable gaming console. It has a familiar design that looks as if it’s a combination of the Game & Watch Multi Screen and Famicom divided in half. According to the introduction, you can enjoy games by inserting Famicom cartridges. The 2.4-inch color LCD screen allows for clear graphics. You can play it anywhere you go, but you can also link it to your TV and enjoy your games on a nice, large screen.

The FC Mobile is sold for ¥5,280 (tax not included) on Nissen’s website. There is also a Super Famicom version called the Super FC Mobile, which is available on Amazon for roughly ¥9,000.

*Twitter translation: These days, there are people who have never even seen a Famicom cartridge. With this, you can play your favorite Famicom games anywhere you go (^_^) I want to play Minelvaton Saga♪ Grandma*
