On stage during the press conference were The Pokémon Company President Tsunekazu Ishihara, Representative Director of Nintendo Shigeru Miyamoto, CEO John Hanke of Niantic Labs, which created the strategy game app Ingress, and Junichi Masuda, board member and head of the development department at Game Freak.

Together they announced the release of Pokémon Go, a smartphone game app being jointly developed by The Pokémon Company, Niantic Labs, and Nintendo.

The game uses smartphone location services to allow players to catch, exchange, and battle Pokémon in the real world.

A similar concept made headlines in Japan and abroad as a 2014 April Fool’s joke titled “Pokémon Challenge” in which Pokémon could be caught in the real world using Google Maps. The game Pokémon Go will be set in the real world too and will be much more interactive.

The released video shows players having fun catching, trading, and battling Pokémon that appear in the real world.

Also revealed at the press conference was an exclusive device called “Pokémon Go Plus” that works with smartphones through Bluetooth technology. It’s safe to say Pokémon Go will be an unprecedented collaboration between Pokémon and Ingress. The app will be available for Android and iOS devices in 2016.
