The popular cuisine-themed manga Kodoku no Gourmet (The Lonely Gourmet), a popular manga written by Masayuki Kusumi and drawn by Jiro Taniguchi, is collaborating with NEXCO East Japan, the company that operates expressways and highways in the Eastern region of Japan. In the scope of this collaboration, Kodoku no Gourmet pilgrimage guides are being distributed at 154 service and parking areas under the jurisdiction of NEXCO East Japan.
Kodoku no Gourmet was serialized between 1994 and 1996 in Monthly Panja. Although it’s not being serialized anymore, chapters have been published irregularly in Spa! since 2008. Although it has only one complete volume, its unique word usage and the main character Goro Inogashira have earned it considerable popularity on the Internet with a total of 400,000 copies published. It was even adapted to a television drama starring Yutaka Matsushige in 2012, with four seasons produced at present.
The distributed pilgrimage guides are original guidebooks titled Kodoku no Dorameshi––in which the “dora” part stands for “driver,” while “meshi” means “meal”––that introduces recommended delicacies and restaurants in service and parking areas of the region. It is being distributed in the shopping corners in certain service and parking areas, and it is presented as a bonus to customers who make a purchase. It is available until supplies run out.
In addition, a special site also opened with the collaboration on which you can search among the driver meals carefully selected from 154 spots. There is even a “Gulp Button” that emulates the gulping sound Goro Inogashira makes before eating, and you can vote with a “Gulp” for the items you like.
Original creator Kusumi commented, “Please enjoy the world of Kodoku no Dorameshi as if you were Goro Inogashira yourself.” There are already many gourmet meals on the site to choose from. Taking off alone in your car might be a little lonely, but you’ll still be able to make delicious memories!
