The seventh and most recent chapter in The Next Generation - Patlabor series of live-action shorts, started showing in theaters on Jan. 10. Meanwhile, anticipation builds for the nationwide release on May 1 of the full-length feature film, The Next Generation - Patlabor: Shuto Kessen (Final Battle in the Capital).

The upcoming film’s poster continues the series’ collaboration with the National Police Agency. However, this time, their seventh collaboration poster skillfully combines the film’s storyline with a matching request from the police, asking people to be on the lookout against signs of terrorism.

The Next Generation - Patlabor has produced collaborative posters with the National Police Agency before. Their partnership first started with a police officer recruitment poster, which featured the AV-98 Ingram, a Tokyo police Patrol Labor robot. This “Patlabor,” as they are called, will also appear in the new feature film. The recruitment poster drew a lot of attention by showing Ingram as sometimes brave and awe-inspiring, while at other times being sweet and caring.

The new film poster features an AV-98 Ingram, heroically posing with weapon at the ready, alongside special assault team policemen with their shields. Together they send the strong message that they refuse to be deterred by the threat of terrorism. With the words, “We will defend this town against terrorism,” and using red as the main color, this presentation produces a rousing feeling of courage. This seventh collaboration poster will be posted in every prefecture by the middle of January.

Since 1988, this story has extended into various media such as OVA, movies, television, manga, and novels, including the recent live-action series based on the hit animated film, Patlabor: The Movie. The 22 million yen project, including seven live-action shorts and a full-length feature film, were produced under the supervision of Mamoru Oshii. The live films are connected to the world presented in the animation, and important characters such as Shinobu Nagumo and Yukihito Tsuge appear in the seven live-action shorts. All seven chapters of the live-action series will show for only two weeks before the premiere of the full-length feature film.
