Sanjigen and Lidenfilms, two new animation studios, have teamed up to bring the world New Initial D the Movie. This series that has been adapted for the big screen many times prior is being depicted anew in today’s style. Sanjigen is in charge of the CG parts, with Lidenfilms in charge of the 2D parts.
The film will be a trilogy, and Part 1, Legend 1 - Awakening, was released in August. It won over fans with its new generation visuals and production values.
Part 2 is slated to release on May 23, 2015. The title of the film is New Initial D the Movie: Legend 2 - Racer. It seems new battles are in store for Takumi Fujiwara, who unexpectedly learns of the world of road racing in the previous film. The already released teaser visual shows the back of a GT-R road racing at night. It gives the feeling that a new drama will ensue.
Events gearing up for the 2015 release are also on the way. First up is the release of the New Initial D the Movie: Legend 1 - Awakening Blu-ray on Dec. 26. Also, in celebration of the release, an event will be held at Mega Web in Ome, Tokyo. “Mega Web x New Initial D the Movie Exhibit” will introduce through works on display the world of Initial D over the New Year’s holiday from Dec. 20, to Jan. 12, 2015. At the venue will be never-before-released animation materials and a full-size AE86. Also, those who spend more than 860 yen on food and drink items at the cafe will receive a limited “86 traffic sign sticker.”
The original work in the series, Initial D, was authored by Shuichi Shigeno and serialized for 18 years beginning in 1995 in Young Magazine (Kodansha). It depicts the youth of racers through high-speed road races. The movie series has become talked about due to the story being reimagined once again from the beginning. It depicts drifting battles between main character Takumi Fujiwara and Akagi RedSuns member Keisuke Takahashi on the Mount Haruna mountain pass.
