Many fans no doubt know that a project spanning many years is warming up for a sequel to the feature length anime Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise, a masterpiece that left its mark on the history of anime. It has been revealed that the project, Uru in Blue, will finally take off in 2015. In addition to that, the project is being mainly produced in Singapore, with its aim being a worldwide audience.

Gainax and Uru in Blue LLP announced that production has begun on Uru in Blue at Anime Festival Asia 2014 held in Singapore from Dec. 5-7. The project also had a booth at the event at which visuals and more were released.

Directing and writing Uru in Blue is the CEO of Gainax, Hiroyuki Yamaga, and in charge of character designs is Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, who is well known from the Evangelion series. These two also worked on Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise.

The project is a feature length anime slated to release simultaneously worldwide in 2018. Also, a short introduction called “Overture Edition” will release in spring 2015.

For production, Gainax is forgoing the standard domestic production committee method and instead has established Uru in Blue LLP, a limited liability partnership in Singapore. Their aim is a work not hampered by established conventions. Through the LLP, they will mainly collect funds and assemble talented people from all over the world. The fact that the first announcement about production is that it will be in Singapore also seems to reflect this information. There is no doubt that there will be great interest regarding in what form this project will be released to the world.

Regarding the production announcement, director Yamaga showed great enthusiasm: “Even to Gainax, Uru in Blue is a special work. We’re setting out on a new path, both technically and in our production method. I want to create this using new techniques from all over the world together with excellent creators from all over the world.”

The inception of the Uru in Blue project came over 20 years ago in 1993. The long-running project has warmed and is shaping up to be quite a larger-than-life work. To the astonishment of many fans, the project’s reboot was announced at the Gainax booth at Tokyo International Anime Fair 2013 held in spring 2013. Now, the project is finally underway at an overseas studio.

Also released along with the production announcement is a poster visual. The red aircraft on the white background is a striking design. Keep an eye out for future developments.
