Footage from Live-Action Patlabor Full-Length Film Releases, Shows Gunfight Between Labors and Helicopter

The countrywide release of the full-length film in the series The Next Generation: Patlabor, all seven chapters to which began screening in April of this year, will occur during Golden Week 2015. In addition to this news, footage from the full-length film has been distributed. Two key points about the film are its highly detailed visuals that were created using 4K cameras and the use of Dolby Atmos sound, the first in Japanese cinema.

The film is about the Patlabor Company of the Special Vehicles Section 2 Division 2, which is equipped with police-issue Labors, as they fight against a terrorist group wreaking havoc on Tokyo. Will the third generation of Section 2 Division 2 be able to stop the terrorists’ violence?

At the currently ongoing Tokyo International Film Festival, it was revealed from the mouth of director Mamoru Oshii that a helicopter called Gray Ghost will make an appearance in the film. Just as he said, there are even scenes in which gunfights unfold between two Patlabors and the helicopter. The released footage shows an Ingram that’s missing an arm and is pointing a gun. The serious tone of the footage will stir up fans’ excitement.

The photos also released at the same time even show new cast member Kanna Mori as the helicopter pilot. Director Oshii also talked about how he depicted the full-length film with a theme around brawls between females, but it seems likely main character Akira Izumino will stand in the way of this. Make sure not to miss any follow-up reports on this film and its many mysteries.

Mobile Police Patlabor is a hugely popular series that has broken huge records and has developed into several media including manga, OVA, movies, and novels. The first live-action film in the franchise, The Next Generation: Patlabor is being directed by Mamoru Oshii who also directed OVA and other films in the franchise. He is also directing himself in the full-length film.
