A new work in the popular musical series Hakuoki has been announced. Performances of the Todo Heisuke arc will begin in January. The story will put the spotlight on Todo.
The Hakuoki series began as a game in 2008 and became a hit with over 700,000 copies of sold to become the “immovable center” of the gaming world. Media mix projects are also plenty for the series, with the theatrical anime being hugely popular. Since the first performance at the Sunshine Theatre in 2012, the musical’s popularity hasn’t waned, and tickets are hard to come by.
Todo Heisuke is a historical figure who was gifted in both the literary and military arts and who was also a pivotal member of “Kondo’s Four Generals” along with Soji Okita, Shinpachi Nagakura, and Hajime Saito. It is also said that he was the first to attack during the Ikedaya incident. In 1867, the third year of the Keiou era, Heisuke quit the Shinsengumi, and it’s said that he was shot by the Shinsengumi later that year. It is also said that he actually narrowly escaped the attack and was able to complete his mission. However, which one is true is unknown. In any case, he lived a turbulent and dramatic life. A point of deep interest regarding the musical is how this character will be portrayed.
A highlight of the Hakuoki musical is, of course, the choreographed sword battles. Toshihiko Sahashi’s music also gives depth to the high quality and dynamic performances. Fans won’t be able to help anticipating this.
Coming before this musical will be an event in November limited to those who previously purchased the Chikage Kazama arc DVD. Expect to be able to hear unexpected stories about all aspects of the Shinsengumi. This as well is something to anticipate.
