No. 1 Fan-Favorite Anime Opening Song is “Only My Railgun,” 2nd is “Connect”

From Nov. 6–12, Anime!Anime! held a survey looking at anime opening and ending songs. A total of 1,288 people responded, and the gender ratio was almost 50/50 with males having a slight majority. Agewise, about half of respondents were in their teens. The survey was divided into answers for “favorite anime opening song” and “favorite anime ending song.” This time, we look at the top 10 results of fans’ favorite anime opening songs.

■ No. 1 is “Only My Railgun”; Many recent anime rank in

At No. 1 is fripSide’s “Only My Railgun.” The song is the opening theme to A Certain Scientific Railgun and became a hit at the time in part for its PV in which magician Maggy Shinji appears. The series’ high popularity can, of course, be attributed also to this song, which won the 15th Animation Kobe Award for Best Theme Song.

In second is “Connect,” the opening theme to Puella Magi Madoka Magica and the second single by ClariS. The song is a bright, impressive type of opening that also keeps prominent the series’ unexpectedness.

At No. 3 is Linked Horizon’s Crimson Bow and Arrow. The song is one that exemplifies the popularity of the massive hit Attack on Titan and is generally well known. Continuing on, at No. 4 is Lia’s “My Soul, Your Beats!” Lia also sings the No. 9 ranked song “Tori no Uta,” a result that shows the high popularity of series by Key.

Collectively, teenagers comprised half of respondents, so many series from recent years ranked in. The seventh ranked song is “Sobakasu” which is the oldest song on the list, released in 1996, but is still highly popular even today due to the influence of the live-action Rurouni Kenshin movie series. The results of the survey show that music has a large influence on the popularity of a series.
