Garm Wars: The Last Druid, the latest work by Mamoru Oshii, a representative director of Japan, will screen as a special invitation work at this year’s 27th Tokyo International Film Festival behind held from Oct. 23-27. The 21 works chosen as special invitation works for this year’s Tokyo International Film Festival were announced on Sept. 19, and Garm Wars: The Last Druid was one of them.
It has been revealed that Garm Wars: The Last Druid is a joint production between Production I.G and Canada and is a large-scale film by director Mamoru Oshii bigger than anything Production I.G has done previously. The movie was first slated to release early this summer, but the completion of the film came just a bit too late. However, the film is finally complete, and it will world premiere at the 27th Tokyo International Film Festival.
The film was first announced to be live action, but according to the synopsis given by the Tokyo International Film Festival the film is a hybrid animation that mixes CG and live action. Though the use of cutting-edge film techniques and various image processing of the live-action scenes, it seems this new film will still retain the feel of director Oshii. The live-action scenes in the film were all shot in Canada, and all the actors give their performances in English. From the start, the aim for this film was for it to be worldwide. This is director Oshii’s first full-length film since 2010’s 28 ½ Mousou no Kyojin. Garm Wars: The Last Druid has become a talked about work at the same time as another of Oshii’s, The Next Generation: Patlabor to release next year.
Garm Wars: The Last Druid is a reboot of the Garm Wars series by director Oshii that broadcast from the late ‘90s to the early ‘00s before going on an indefinite break. Being that it has been 15 years since the well-known incomplete epic Garm Wars, attention is focusing on what kind of work the movie will be. The world premiere screening at the Tokyo International Film Festival will be the first chance to see it.
