Part 3 of The Next Generation: Patlabor, a large-scale project in which seven parts and a full-length movie are being released sequentially to theaters in Japan, will fly into theaters on July 12. Screening will be Episodes 4 and 5. Now, a poster visual for Part 3 has been released.
The title of Episode 4 is “Stray Dog Afternoon.” Directing is Takanori Tsujimoto who has also worked on Eat and Run - 6 Beautiful Grifters: 2 Guns and Decapitation - Kill. Picking up the megaphone for Episode 5 is chief director Mamoru Oshii who directed himself. Oshii performing in the film himself will likely gather interest from many fans. Episode 5 will be the first part of “A Large Kaiju Appears.”
“A Large Kaiju Appears” shows a kaiju running rampant through Atami, which director Oshii is a resident of. It seems the chapter will be filled with the kinds of finishing touches director Oshii is known for. It’s also said that Kyusaku Shimada will appear dressed as a mysterious blue-eyed scientist from Venus. Director Oshii released the following comment regarding the release of Episode 5 “A Large Kaiju Appears”: “When I think of Atami, I think of hot springs and monster films. When I think of monster films, I think of beautiful women and hot springs; so I wanted to shoot a film in my hometown of Atami that was a monster film with beautiful women (laughs).”
On the other hand, in “Stray Dog Afternoon,” Akira goes on the hunt for supplies at a convenience store and encounters an armed terrorist. Akira becomes captured and Yuma and Yamazaki then come looking for her only to be captured themselves. What will happen to the terrorist and these three? Don’t miss the startling developments.
The newly released visual for Part 3 matches “A Large Kaiju Appears.” Because the film is an homage to Showa era monster films, the poster has a retro-style design that brings to mind the monster films of yesteryear. The Ingram is shown battling against a monster that resembles a Kappa and the poster has a completely different feel than those for Parts 1 and 2, which shows the wide breadth of the series.
Even after Part 3, the movies will continue releasing sequentially up till Part 7. A full-length film will also release nationwide in Japan during Golden Week 2015. Mamoru Oshii is directing and writing these as well. Each of the movies in this series that fully opens the world of Oshii is not to be missed.
