A collaboration campaign is underway to commemorate the release of the newest volume of the manga Black Lagoon.
Black Lagoon is a cool gun action manga by Rei Hiroe that has been serialized in Monthly Sunday GX (Gene-X) since 2001. It is a popular title that was adapted into a TV anime in 2006 and novelized in 2008 by Gen Urobuchi, the scriptwriter known for Puella Magi Madoka Magica. The series has a high reputation for its hard-boiled world and intense gun action and has many enthusiastic fans both in Japan and abroad.
Now, to commemorate the latest volume of the comic and also the first in four years, Vol. 10, Black Lagoon is carrying out a collaboration campaign with Shooting Bar EA, a bar run by the animation studio Gainax, where guests can enjoy both air gun shooting and drinks. During the campaign, the interior will have props and accessories decorated with the front and back covers of the manga on display, exhibitions of reprinted original color illustrations, and various other highlights to give a taste of the world of Black Lagoon, allowing guests to look back on the history of the series.
In addition, for the duration of this campaign, stores in the vicinity of EA are holding a “Special Book Store Campaign,” in which guests who purchase the above-mentioned Vol. 10 in either Animate Auspicious Temple Shop or Books Ruhe will be presented with a shotgun drink and a convertible “EA Service Coupon.”
This collaboration was realized on the initiative of EA, as many of the customers and the staff are Black Lagoon fans, and they had received ardent requests for doing so. Among EA’s previous accomplishments are collaborations with Resident Evil and Stella Women's Academy, High School Division Class C 3, and the present collaboration event utilizes their previous experience while splendidly reproducing the cool and tough atmosphere of Black Lagoon.
However, it is the special collaboration menu that is most worthy of attention. The staff’s recommendations––“Lagoon Steak,” “Revy Cocktail,” “That Thing Roberta is Eating,” “Roberta Cocktail,” and “Balalaika Cocktail”––are all themed after the world, scenes, or lines of Black Lagoon and reproduced accordingly, especially the candy in “Balalaika Cocktail,” which was made by craftsmen as a special order for the occasion. It made us understand that you can’t come up with ideas like this unless you are a fan.
Even in the shooting range, which could well be called the center of EA, guests can pick various (air) guns that are used in Black Lagoon. We can also catch a glimpse of the staff’s love for Black Lagoon here, as it seems they also have available the Sword Cutlass, the favorite gun of Revy, one of the main characters. Before shooting, participants must sign a waiver stating the basic rules. However, this is just a precaution taken so that guests can safely enjoy air shooting, so there is no need to be alarmed or afraid.
