Broken Blade Reaches 3 Million Copies in Print, Large-Scale Train Ad Campaign Launched for 13th Volume

Over 3 million total volumes have been published of Yūnosuke Yoshinaga’s popular manga Broken Blade, Comic Meteor revealed. The milestone was reached in one fell swoop with the release of the 13th volume on May 12.

The series is currently running on the webcomic site Comic Meteor. Set in the Kingdom of Krisna, the main character Rygart and his companions encounter various destinies with the rise and fall of the country.

Since as early as 2007, the series has been released online through a webcomic site. The hit series is paving the way for other webcomics.

Its anime adaptation has played a large part in the success of the series. It was shown in six parts at screening events beginning in 2010, which quickly raised its profile. The Broken Blade anime received positive reviews and a revamped TV version has been airing since April 2014. This too is boosting the series’ popularity.

The cumulative actual number of printed volumes had reached 2 million in 2013, and that number has increased by 1 million in just one year. The TV series has most likely had an impact on this increase. There were also a great deal of reissued versions in 2013. With large-scale revisions by the author, these reissues drew in new fans, turning Broken Blade into a longtime seller.

In an effort to raise the series popularity even more, Comic Meteor has undertaken a major transportation advertising campaign since May 12. Broken Blade is appearing on trains across the country, including the major lines in the Tokyo metropolitan area, such as the Yamanote Line, as well as the Kansai area, Hokkaido, Kyushu and other areas.

The campaign includes in-train video ads, such as Train Channel, West Vision and Metro Vision, digital signage around train stations and posters within the trains. The innovative video ads combine the manga and anime. It will be something to look out for when riding the train.
