The first installment of The Next Generation: Patlabor will begin in theatres across Japan on April 5. During this project, seven installments and a feature-length film will be released over the course of about a year, and the poster for Part 2 has already been released.
The Next Generation: Patlabor is the first live action title in the Mobile Police Patlabor franchise, which has long become well-loved in manga, anime, and other forms. The production of large real-life Ingrams for the films has already brought the series quite a bit of attention.
In the visuals released for the second installment titled “Perform Type-98 Reboot/Iron Fist Akira” an Ingram stands against a blue sky. Akira Izumino gives a refreshing smile and beside her is none other than Naoto Takenaka.
Takenaka played the role of Shigeki Arakawa in the animated film Patlabor 2: The Movie. He is expected to guest star here in Episode 3 “Iron Fist Akira.” Just as he expanded endlessly about war with Goto in the anime, he is said to take on the role of a mysterious, talented old gamer and talk extensively about “ideas for winning” with gaming fan Izumino.
Also commendable is the appearance of the familiar standing soba shop Mach from director Oshii’s anime and memorable scenes for long-time fans. Given this, viewers may even be able to expect to see everyone’s favorite basset hound.
Since 1988, Mobile Police Patlabor has been a hit anime that has included OVA, TV series, and films. Many of the robots in the series, which are known as “Labors,” had a realistic roughness to them, making the “Griffons” of Schaft Enterprises particularly impactful.
The bargaining between Schaft Enterprises president Utsumi and the members of the Special Vehicle Division 2 left an impression with many fans.
Taking the director’s chair for the live-action films The Next Generation: Patlabor is Mamoru Oshii, who also directed some of the anime. Live-action versions of a Type-98 Ingram, realistic at roughly 8 meters in height, and the Section 2 building and labor dock have also been created for the adaptation.
After a quarter of a century, this marks the “launch” of a completely new project with a new generation of characters. The massive project will include 12 episodes released in theatres in seven installments and a feature-length film to be released during Japan’s Golden Week in 2015.
