Space Brothers #0, an Episode 0 Specially Written by the Author, to Release in Japan on Aug. 9

The title and release date of the anime movie adaptation of Space Brothers has been announced. The movie is titled Space Brothers #0 and it will have a countrywide roadshow release on Aug. 9. #0 is read “number zero” and it will depict the origin of Mutta Nanba’s and Hibito’s dreams. In addition to this announcement, a teaser visual and trailer are also available. Being the first anime movie in the series, there will be content to heighten fans’ expectations.

The script for Space Brothers #0 is being specifically written by series creator Chūya Koyama. Koyama has put his serialization in Morning on hold for the time being to pen this original story that he wanted to write at any cost. The movie will tell a story that can’t be seen in the original manga or anime in addition to being an emotional episode that captures the essence of Space Brothers.

In the teaser visual drawn by Koyama, Mutta and Hibito can both be seen in their younger days. “In order to depict the continuation of their dreams, I wrote the origin of their dreams.” From this tag line on the visual, you can see the extent of Koyama’s confidence. The trailer also has a chest-tightening tag line that says “Here, is the origin. This, is Episode 0.”

Directing the movie is Ayumu Watanabe from the TV series, and creating the animation is A-1 Pictures, also from the TV anime. The origin of these brothers’ dreams will be revealed for the first time in the movie. Pay attention to this Episode 0 being brought to life with extraordinary quality.

Space Brothers began serialization in 2008. Including related books, the total amount of copies in print for the series is over 14 million. In 2011, the series completed the unthinkable achievement of winning both the Kodansha Manga Award and the Shogakukan Manga Award. The TV anime began broadcasting in April 2012. In May of that year, a live-action movie adaptation was released, which became a bit hit, making ¥1.5 billion in box office revenue. The TV anime is broadcast during the 17:00 time slot on Sunday nights, and it also has a high level of recognition from the general population. Just like the live-action movie, good things are expected from Space Brothers #0.
