Screening events will begin being successively held starting on April 5 for the live-action Patlabor project The Next Generation: Patlabor, which will span seven chapters. Now, a new trailer has been released for the series’ first two chapters, Episode 0: “The Glorious Section 2, Division 2” and Episode 1: “Third Generation, Dispatch!” Narrating the trailer is Shigeru Chiba, who plays Shigeo Shiba. Chiba, who bridges the anime and live-action series, is a vital member to take note of.
The video starts off with the narration “The Patlabors have become rare due to a recession that has gone on for far too long.” In Episode 0, the prologue to the entire series, Chiba introduces the history of Section 2, Division 2. This harkens back to the members of the first generation Section 2, Division 2 who appeared in the anime, and there is even an impactful scene that shows a portrait of the deceased Seitarō Sakaki, the first generation labor chief.
Continuing on, the Episode 1 preview shows the comical daily lives of Section 2, Division 2 that closely resembles the anime series. It also shows a peek at a confrontation between the Kuratas, which has picked up attention as a gigantic robot that can be piloted, and the AC-98 Ingram. The preview expresses the breadth of the wide world of Patlabor.
Also, the full-length film to release during Golden Week 2015 is the first Japanese film to use Dolby Atmos and 4K video. We wonder what will be born from this next generation cinematic sound technology and high-quality video. This as well is a point to look forward to.
Directing The Next Generation: Patlabor is Mamoru Oshii who also directed the anime series. The series uses cutting-edge CG and VFX and perfectly portrays the 8-meter-tall AC-98 Ingram.
Even for the full-length movie to release next year, Oshii is directing and writing. The curtain is finally opening on this big project coming to life 26 years after the creation of Patlabor.
