Manga Translation Battle Vol. 2 Award Ceremony and Symposium to Be Held

An award ceremony and symposium for the Manga Translation Battle Vol. 2, a manga translation content that tested participants’ skills at translating Japanese manga, will be held on Feb. 13 (Thurs) in Roppongi, Tokyo.

The Manga Translation Battle, a contest held to support manga translators and act as a facilitator for the worldwide disbursement of Japan’s manga culture, was held over several months on a special site on Tokyo Otaku Mode. Winning the Grand Prix in this second installment of the contest was Sarah Kim Perry for her translation of the manga Koi to wa Yobenai. Furthermore, the prize-winners’ submissions including Perry’s can now be viewed on the contest page on Tokyo Otaku Mode.

In addition to the award-winners being recognized for their achievements, the award ceremony and symposium will feature discussions with the manga authors, manga translators, publishers, and the contest judges regarding their views on such topics as the interest in and difficulty of translating manga, the differences in the criterion for a work being viewed as a hit in Japan and overseas, the possibilities inherent in Japanese manga, and more.

This time, TOM participated, as did more people than ever before. Many people who had previously not known about the contest also participated for the first time. Due to the increase in participants, the skill level of the translators was higher than before. We are very glad to see that by taking part, participants were able to be connected with offering those overseas a chance to enjoy high-quality manga as well as contribute to elevating the status of translators.

Read on for further details regarding the award ceremony and symposium.
