Madoka Magica and Gintama Take Top 2 Spots in Landslide Victory in 2013 Anime Film Survey By Anime Anime

Which anime film of 2013 was the most interesting?
Which anime film of 2013 was the most interesting?

The editorial team at Anime Anime held a survey from the end of 2013 through the beginning of 2014 regarding Japanese anime films that released theatrically in 2013. The question they asked was “Which anime film released in 2013 was the most interesting and satisfying?” Respondents could only choose one film from a list provided. Even though it was only held over a short period, over 500 people answered the survey. In regard to this, the editorial team at Anime Anime would like to say, “Thank you very much to everyone who answered our survey.”

Of the 40 works included on the list, just which work did Anime Anime readers think was the best of 2013? The results of the survey are somewhat to be expected and somewhat surprising at the same time.

In the No. 1 spot is the big hit that made roughly 2 billion yen in box office revenue after it had a mid-size release in October, Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion Story. Taking the No. 2 spot is Gintama: The Movie: The Final Chapter: Be Forever Yorozuya which released in July. These two works picked up 103 and 100 votes, respectively, and crushed the competition, picking up more than one fourth of the total votes. It was a tight race between these two during the vote counting, but there was a huge difference between the votes from males and females. Gintama: The Movie picked up overwhelming support from females, with 90% of the votes cast for the film being from females, which equated to 40% of the overall female votes tallied in the survey. On the other hand, the film that was largely supported by males was Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion Story. However, this film was also abundantly supported by females as well, which helped it edge out Gintama for the top spot.

It is certainly surprising that these two works received the vast majority of votes over all the others. A top 10 list was even made and the sixth ranked work a below each received less than 20 votes. By limiting the amount of films fans could vote on to only one, it elevated the works that fans feel most strongly about. For example, they ranked even higher than the national hit The Wind Rises (No. 5) and The Garden of Words which was released on a small scale. It seems the rest of the films in the top 10 can even be thought of in the same way. At No. 6 is Hanasaku Iroha the Movie: Home Sweet Home, at No. 7 is Code Geass: Akito the Exiled - Chapter 2: The Torn-Up Wyvern, at No. 9 is The Garden of Sinners the Movie: Gospel in the Future, and tied for No. 10 is Patema Inverted and A Certain Magical Index the Movie: Miracle of Endymion.
