After returning to school from Aki's house, Hachiken immediately goes to check on Pork Bowl. He's astonished to see how big he's become.
Everyone starts catching up about summer break. They're all surprised at how much weight Tamako lost and how beautiful she looks! Tokiwa seems to have undergone an image change as well, dying his hair bright red, but he's soon forced to shave it bald.
Hachiken takes it upon himself to take care of Pork Bowl, trying to fatten him up to be the same size as the other pigs before getting shipped off. Hachiken begins waking up at 3 a.m. each morning to feed him, but ends up being late for equestrian club and forgetting his cleaning duties. After the first week, he is completely wiped out.
Hachiken waters down Pork Bowl’s feed to make him eat more, and is pleased when he finally reaches the same weight as the other pigs. However, he begins to think about if he'll be able to eat Pork Bowl when the time comes, and can't keep his concentration when riding his horse.
To cheer him up, Aki invites him to go to a festival with everyone. The others ask Hachiken to buy them food with the money he earned from his part-time job, but he refuses to spend his hard-earned cash on them. Aki is pleased to see this.
Hachiken is still seriously worried about Pork Bowl. His seriousness begins to draw others into discussion. The next day, pork curry is served at school. Hachiken eats it deliciously, and with a smile.
Adolescence is a time when we face our doubts, question what is right, and try to find clear answers for ourselves. This experience of deep contemplation, as well as the answers it can provide, are certainly worth the trouble.
