Hachiken has gotten used to working on Aki's family farm, but the workload given to him by her jealous father is wearing on him a bit.
On top of that, escaped cows from a neighboring ranch get mixed up with Aki's cattle. They try and move the cow to the playing field before they devastate the fields, but don't have much luck. Just then, a mysterious man appears, riding a motorcycle. He seems to be directing the cattle pretty well…before he wipes out on a cow pie.
The mysterious man turns out to be Shogo, Hachiken's older brother. He says he has quit studying at Tokyo University and is riding around Hokkaido by bike. He offers to make ramen for everyone at lunch. It turns out looking good, but the taste is devastating. Hachiken's conversations with his long-absent brother reveal something stilted about their relationship.
The next day, Hachiken talks with Aki's grandfather about milk cows and even gets his first taste of delicious raw milk. However, Hachiken makes a huge mistake when he forgets to connect the pipe he got the raw milk from, and all of the milk ends up going down the drain.
In the bathtub, Hachiken thinks about the cost of the milk that was lost. The next day, he gets up before everyone else and begins work to atone for his mistake. Kamaba and his sisters show up with fresh corn. It is also extremely delicious.
That night, Aki's family gives Hachiken his payment, but he tells them frankly that he cannot accept. However, Aki's parents insist that Hachiken deserves to be paid for his work. Hachiken contemplates the value of money.
Hachiken's first part-time job experience causes him to think about labor and compensation. You can test a man's worth by how he uses his money. Will Hachiken's path to adulthood lead him to become a wise man? We shall see.
