Kalafina and ClariS Selected for Theme Songs to “Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion” Releasing in October

Puella Magi Madoka Magica became a highly talked-about anime when it was broadcast in 2011, and its popularity has continued to increase since then. Now, that popularity is poised to increase even more when the movie Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion releases in Japan on Oct. 26. On Aug. 27, the theme songs to this movie were finally revealed. The two theme songs are “Kimi no Gin no Niwa” by Kalafina and “Colorful” by ClariS. These two groups are veterans of the series, having also done music for the TV anime as well as the first two movies.

Kalafina is a three-person vocal unit produced by Yuki Kajiura. They have been in charge of music for a number of popular works. For this new song as well, Kajiura was in charge of the lyrics, composition, and arrangement, delivering through the song a look at the world of the movie. Kalafina was also in charge of the ending theme for the TV anime, titled “Magia,” as well as the theme song to Madoka Magica the Movie: Eternal, titled “Hikari Furu.” They are a unit that has been deeply involved with Madoka Magica. The CD for this new single will be released on Nov. 6.

ClariS, a vocal unit comprised of members Clara and Alice, debuted in 2010 while they were still in middle school. Their major debut was the song “Irony,” which was used as the opening theme to the anime Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai. This song was bathed in attention and debuted on the Oricon chart at No. 7. Their second single was the song “Connect,” which was used as the opening theme to the TV anime Madoka Magica. Their sixth single, “Luminous,” was used as the theme song for Madoka Magica the Movie: Beginnings. Continuing from this, they have again tied themselves to the Madoka Magica series with their new song, “Colorful.” The lyrics and composition of the song were handled by Shō Watanabe, who has worked with the duo since “Connect,” and arrangement was handled by Atsushi Yuasa. Due to these names, fans have plenty to look forward to.

Though ClariS has gained huge popularity among the young generation, they are shrouded in mystery because they have never shown their faces. Up until now, they have only appeared as illustrations drawn by various popular artists. For their new single as well, a new illustration of them has been released. This illustration, drawn by the same team that worked on the movie, shows the two girls in the same middle school uniforms as those worn by the main characters.
