The new movie Hunter x Hunter: The Last Mission will be released in theaters on Dec. 27 throughout Japan. This is the second movie of the series which is based on the popular manga. Although production on the film was announced earlier, it is only now that the release day and title have been made public, along with an outline of the plot.
The movie will reveal the dark history of the Hunter Association––the association the protagonist, Gon, and his friends belong to––and a major incident involving all hunters. It seems like a big-scale story spiced with grand battles with hunters freely using Nen. Netero, head of the Hunter Association and the strongest Nen user, will also play a great role in the story.
Hunter x Hunter is a manga by Yoshihiro Togashi that started serialization in 1998 in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump. At present, there are 32 volumes published, and the total number of copies sold exceeds 64 million. The secrets to its popularity are the grandiose story and the unique characters. The anime has been broadcasting on Nippon Television since fall of 2011, and the show, just like the manga, enjoys the support of a wide age group.
The first theatrical film in the series, Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge, was released early this year on Jan. 12. It became a big hit with over 1.2 billion yen box-office revenue, which clearly shows how popular the series is.
By the time The Last Mission it will be almost a full year since Phantom Rouge was released. Since the release date falls just before the New Year on Dec. 27, crowds of people are expected to flock to theaters due to it being the New Year’s holiday. This will no doubt be a big hit that gathers legions of fans, continuing in the footsteps of the previous movie.
