“Blue Exorcist the Movie” is Coming to the U.S.! Screening to Begin This Month!

The U.S theatrical release of Blue Exorcist the Movie, which was released in December 2012 in Japan, has been decided. The movie will release on Aug. 17 in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Houston, Katy, and Columbus.

The original work for Blue Exorcist is a manga by Kazue Katō that is currently serialized in Jump Square. The total amount of volumes sold for the series up to the current 10th volume have surpassed 10 million. In 2011, the series was adapted into an anime that was also streamed in North America. This streaming became a huge hit, recording more than 12 million plays.

Blue Exorcist takes place between two worlds: one in which humans live and one in which demons live. The story centers on the main character, Rin Okumura, who is the son of Satan and possesses the ability to exorcise demons, and his twin brother, Yukio.

The movie is set in True Cross Academy during the Carnival, which only happens once every 11 years. The story expands to include Rin and the rest of the exorcists. While working to create a barrier so no demons can invade the Carnival, an incident occurs involving a runaway ghost train. Being suited for the mission to stop the train, Rin and Yukio go to investigate and meet a demon in the appearance of a young boy named Usamaro whom Rin tries to talk to. Rin and Usamaro cross over their connection of both being demons and exorcists and become friends, but back at True Cross Academy, mysterious incidents begin occurring!

The movie was produced by A-1 Pictures, the same company that also produced the TV anime. However, the main staff was changed for the movie and includes Atsushi Takahashi as director and Reiko Yoshida as scenario writer. Due to this, the movie has a different appeal than that of the TV series.
