“Kaitemita” - The Possibility of the Future of Creators Being Expanded Due to the Internet

In our present age when anyone can freely upload information to the Internet, there is an increasing number of people who use the Internet as a means for promotion and advocacy as well as people who browse that information. For example, for most TV anime, they use an official homepage or an official Twitter account on which the anime’s production staff can distribute various information and to communicate with the viewers.

In such an age, people, who want to make anime in the future or want to not just read, but also draw manga challenge themselves in illustrations or manga creation and upload the process to the Internet in a so-called Kaitemita (Try to Draw) video. These are very popular, and especially on Nico Nico Douga, videos with the “Kaitemita” tag are being uploaded in a great amount and with an increasing access rate.

Most of the users who create these Kaitemita videos are not pro illustrators or anime creators, but amateurs. The contents are also diverse: There are people who draw unique illustrations by hand, and there are also those who use PC and tools to their full potential to create precise drawings. Another good point is that as most of these videos are uploaded in a fast-forwarded state, even the ones that took long to complete are usually only a few minutes to slightly longer than 10 minutes in length, so fans can watch them at their leisure.

We are going to introduce a few popular Kaitemita creators. Let’s start with Kohaku Miyabino, who is known for his K-On! Kaitemita series. He drew the popular character Akiyama Mio in Paint Tool SAI in a thorough and beautiful way. His video has been accessed more than 400,000 times, with this number steadily increasing. On the other hand, Godees draws various anime characters by hand and possesses the incredible skill of using both his hands for the rough sketch. There is also Lack, who gets good reviews for his abrasive One Piece illustrations; Miharu Art Koubou, who draws Dragon Ball and Neon Genesis Evangelion characters with superb technique; xxans00, who makes stylish vocaloid illustrations in AzPainter2; 24poni, who has more than 1,000,000 views for his speed drawings of Luffy, the main character of One Piece; and Mamehiyo, who draws characters of various genres from original to current popular series, such as Kuroko’s Basketball or Attack on Titan. There are many whose skills outshine that of a pro’s.

It might be reasonable to say that popular next generation creators are very likely to be born from among these talented amateurs because people from all over the world can browse the Kaitemita videos they have uploaded. If that is the case, there really is no reason for their talents to be neglected.
