“Coppelion” TV Anime Project Renewed, First Episode Screens in Paris and LA

On July 5, it was announced that Coppelion, a currently serialized manga in Monthly Young Magazine (Kodansha), will be adapted into a TV anime that will begin broadcasting on BS11 this fall.

Syncing up with this announcement, the key visual, three main cast members, and artist in charge of the opening and ending themes have also been revealed. The main cast, three girls who become burdened with the fate of Japan, are Haruka Tomatsu as Naruse Ibara, Kana Hanazawa as Fukasaku Aoi, and Satomi Akesaka as Nomura Taeko. This is indeed a stellar lineup. Furthermore, artist Angela will be in charge of both the opening and ending themes.

The anime to Coppelion was actually announced three years ago in 2010. Since then, all news on the anime’s development had stopped. However, the project has been restarted, and the anime has been officially announced to begin this fall.

Even though the TV broadcast is still three months away, the first episode is already completed and was screened earlier this month at Japan Expo in Paris and Anime Expo in Los Angeles.

Coppelion, written by Tomonori Inoue, is a sci-fi action manga set in the near future. After a meltdown at a power plant, 90% of the residents of the former capital Tokyo are killed. The city now lies in ruin, with no presence of its former glory remaining. Several decades after this tragedy, three girls called Coppelion appear in the city.

At first glance, they look like normal high school girls, but they aren’t wearing any gear to protect them from the dangerously high radiation levels. This is because they are humans born artificially who possess a resistance to radiation. The three girls belong to a special force of the Ground Self-Defense Force Third Division, and they are tasked with searching the deserted former capital for survivors.
