Tokyo University of the Arts can be referred to as Japan’s hall of fame for art. Talented future generations go to the school to complete the mastery of their craft. What do you think of when you hear of a university graduation exhibition?

The fourth graduation exhibition for the Department of Animation in the Graduate School of Film and New Media at Tokyo University of the Arts called “Gendai Animation 04 Sail” was held from March 8-10 in Yokohama, and March 16-22 in Tokyo. The Eurospace theater in Shibuya lent their venue for this exhibition of original works. In the dark and quiet theater, 15 graduate works and seven first-year graduate works were screened over a two hour period.

The rich lineup featured a variety of art styles. Some were of an orthodox animation style while others featured clay animation, watercolors, and abstract line drawings. The great breadth of expression from the students all participating in the same animation major was shocking. It was impressive to see how dedicated students were with creating just one scene.
