Rulers of the Seasons (Winter)

This is a series of four works that weave together playing card suits (clubs, diamonds, hearts, spades) and seasons (spring, summer, fall, winter). They’re made so that when lined up brooches with trees and animals for each season in the middle appear. The theme colors and motifs are based on cards from different regions (Germany, Italy, Swiss), and the characters borrow from the official French King, Queen, and Jack face cards. The winter spade is blue and stands for “death and army.” Minerva, the goddess of strategy, is crying. The army will be defeated.
