OtapediaPennywise - Action Figures

It has been terrifying audiences since the novel came out in 1986. While the terrifying hallucinations featured in the story are scary enough, the titular “It,” Pennywise the Dancing Clown, is the standout horror of the series. For horror fans that collect creepy merchandise, Pennywise is one of the most recognizable staples. However, in recent years sculptors have created unique, sometimes funny, but always creepy renditions of the world’s scariest clown. The most unique Pennywise figures are “ArtFX Stephen King’s It 1990 Pennywise,” “Nendoroid It Pennywise,” and “Horror Bishoujo It 2017 Pennywise.”

ArtFX Stephen King’s It 1990 Pennywise Figure

Pennywise the Dancing Clown is a realized nightmare in this ArtFX figure. Based on his original 1990 miniseries design, the figure is more of a bust style as only Pennywise’s upper body is shown with a flat base. The figure represents how fear can manifest anywhere at any time. Pennywise appears to be emerging from rumpled fabric which forms a ring around his waist. He rests his elbow in front of him, cradling his head in his propped hand. He looks as if he’s been expecting a visitor and his mouth is open and smiling. His eyes are painted to resemble the bloodshot, crazed look of his 90s portrayal. More brushwork stands out on the clown suit. The back features a delicate pattern of leafy branches. The famous Kotobukiya sculpting shows in the creases of the puffy sleeves, following the natural line and effects of his bent arms.

Nendoroid It Pennywise Figure

The murderous clown still looks absolutely terrifying in chibi form. Good Smile Company’s Pennywise Nendoroid resembles the 2017 movie version, including the crooked teeth and cracking makeup near his hair. The figure comes with two expressions. One is Pennywise’s neutral, blue-eyed face. The other features his demonic attack mode, eyes turned yellow and mouth opened wide for devouring. Included accessories complete memorable scenes from the movie. The S.S. Georgie paper boat features the name scrolled on the side. Pennywise also has his signature red balloon. Most notably, the figure includes a sewer-like case to put Pennywise in, recreating his first horrifying appearance in the film. The figure also includes interchangeable hand parts for posing with the accessories.

Horror Bishoujo It 2017 Pennywise Figure

Pennywise gets a whole new look in this horror bishoujo figure from Kotobukiya. Now as a cute clown girl, Pennywise bends at the waist, offering a red balloon. She has copper-colored hair cropped in a bob with two tiny ponytails on top. Her face has become decidedly less frightening, but she retains the white makeup and red lines connecting the bottom of her sinister yellow eyes to her pouty lips. Her clown outfit has become more revealing, with the top of her suit plunging below her neck ruff and her bloomer like shorts stop high above her bandage wrapped leg. All of the sculpting detail on the clothing is incredibly detailed. The puffy sleeves and bloomers look airily voluminous. The pink bow on her back ruffles beautifully. Her high heeled shoes step through puddles of blood, with a tiny S.S. Georgie, washed up against her foot.

It Series Story

It tells the story of strange happenings involving the kids of Derry, Maine. A group of seven misfits, the self-proclaimed “Losers Club” realize they are all being stalked by the same monster. The monster taunts them with hallucinations of their greatest fears and takes the form of a clown named Pennywise. After comparing terrifying visions and doing historical research, the kids realize the monster, “It,” has been attacking kids in the town for decades. The kids follow It down to the sewers and seemingly defeat it, putting an end to the child murders in their town. They swear to return and stop the killings if the monster should ever return. 27 years later, now all adults, the members of the Losers Club have mostly forgotten their childhood trauma. Their lives are interrupted when one member calls them all up, reminding them of their promise, bringing them all back to Derry.

It Series Development

Novelist Stephen King first got the idea for It when reimagining the tale “The Three Billy Goats Gruff” in 1978. Originally he intended for the main monster to take the form of a troll, yet after revisions ended up with Pennywise the Dancing Clown. The 1,100-page book came out in 1986. Publisher’s Weekly printed that It was the best-selling hardcover book of the year. In 1990, ABC aired a two-part six-hour miniseries adaptation of the book. Tim Curry’s portrayal of Pennywise has been stated as one of the scariest horror performances in modern film. In 2017, the first of two film adaptations premiered, focusing on the first round of events with the Losers Club. The second film about the adult years premiered in 2019. The book, miniseries, and films are all considered some of the most frightening horror media.
