OtapediaPennywise It - BE@RBRICK

Clowns are supposed to be funny; to bring out the silliness and fun that sometimes isn’t so apparent in everyday life. Not this one; not Pennywise. “Beep Beep Richie! They ALL float down here. When you're down here with us, you'll float too!”. This bone-chilling line is one of many delivered by the make-up clad shapeshifter. Monstrous and cunning, Pennywise preys on the fears of the characters to no end; sometimes even the readers and viewers too! BE@BRICK’s work with the IT franchise has brought the fearsome Pennywise home—albeit a somewhat cuter version with far fewer claws and teeth.

BE@RBRICK Collaboration Background

When it comes to movie collaborations, BE@RBRICK has an absolute treasure trove of figures licensed by Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. Some of these include characters from Batman and Superman franchises, the Matrix series, 300, and more.

Collaboration Planning and Launch Information

One month prior to the premiere of ‘It: Chapter Two’ (released in September 2019), BE@RBRICK and Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. teamed up to design and deliver the bear version of the frightfully sinister Pennywise.

A dirty yellow grin is framed by a mean frown—the classic Pennywise expression. White face paint and red lips with a single red line stretching up and over each eye. Yellow pupils denote the unnatural nature of Pennywise’s being. Interestingly in this figure, the designers have hit on a stroke of genius when painting Pennywise’s ears. By painting the inner parts of the bear’s ears orange and the outside white, the illusion of Pennywise’s wild hairstyle is created. Dirty white and grey frills make up the rest of his somber attire. All in all, a very recognizable character made very recognizably bear.

The bigger the better. Why settle for a 400% figure when there’s a 1000% figure? At more than double the size (280mm and 700mm) this is a huge figure. No less detail, no less gruesome smirk; no expenses have been spared here.

About Pennywise

Pennywise is older than time. A transcendental entity that came into existence in a void outside of the universe. Pennywise then came to Earth either on some kind of ship or asteroid and landed in what would become modern-day Derry. Sleeping for millions of years, and waking up to feed on the Native Americans that lived in the area, Pennywise kept himself hidden for years. Sleeping for roughly 27 years and waking up to feast, Pennywise has been responsible for the deaths of countless people, especially children. Using fear to control and defeat people, he takes the form of whatever frightens them the most. This is easy to do with children, therefore children make up the majority of his menu. Eventually though, after another 27-year sleep, he awoke in modern-day Derry to meet his match against the Losers Club.

Other Important IT Characters

IT is an immensely long and detailed novel. There are over twenty main characters to follow and the background for each is dense and intricate. Not to mention that the story takes place both during the main characters’ childhood and adulthood, shifting between the two as the story progresses. However, the losers club makes up the meat of the story. Led by William "Bill" Denbrough, it consists of Benjamin "Ben" Hanscom, Beverly "Bev" Marsh, Richard "Richie" Tozier, Michael "Mike" Hanlon, Edward "Eddie" Kaspbrak, and Stanley "Stan" Uris. Some supporting characters are more important than others but two that are vital to the story are Henry Bowers and Georgie.

Georgie Denbrough

The younger brother of William “Bill” Denbrough. Georgie is the first that we see of Pennywise’s victims. He is a 6 (or 7 depending on adaptation) year old boy who eagerly races his paper boat down the street in the rain. It drifts into a sewer opening however and Pennywise appears to tempt Georgie with it. Georgie’s arm is bitten off and he is left to die by the side of the sewer opening (or dragged in, in the movie adaptation). A lot of Bill’s contempt for Pennywise comes from the murder of his little brother.

Henry Bowers

Henry Bowers is the school bully. He is often seen with his two cronies driving around town or bullying members of the Losers Club. His antics are often extreme, so far as to attempt to carve his name into Ben’s stomach with a knife. He is eventually tormented by Pennywise and ends up killing his abusive father with a knife. Following this, he attempts to kill the Losers Club but is thrown down a well. He is soon arrested and locked up in an asylum for the mentally unwell for 27 years. There he meets Pennywise again who returns him his knife and he begins his attack on the Losers Club once again.

The Losers Club

The heroes of the story. All misfits with their own personal quirks and weirdnesses. Initially, they come together as the result of being outcast and bullied by their peers. As the story progresses, however, the threat of Pennywise becomes prominent and the Losers Club becomes one of his main targets. After defeating the wicked cosmic entity, they all move away and start new lives apart from Mike, who remains in Derry as a librarian. When the killings happen again after 27 years though, the club return to Derry to finish off the job and defeat the mad clown once and for all.
