Disney and BE@RBRICK Collaboration Background

Medicom Toy began their BE@RBRICK collaboration with Disney in 2010. Since then, the collaboration has expanded to include designs from third-party collaborators as well.

Collaboration Planning and Launch

The first Disney BE@RBRICK release was a Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse figure set in February 2010. Mickey received his first solo BE@RBRICK in 2012 in a USA-themed print. Medicom Toy introduced collaborative Mickey designs in 2019. That year Mickey served as the BE@RBRICK model for collaborations with Readymade, Billionaire Boys Club, and BAPE. In 2020, a crystal-accented Mickey went on sale in December. A 400% figure depicting Mickey's Fantasia movie design came out in January of 2021.

BE@RBRICK Mickey Mouse 400%

This articulated BE@RBRICK figure depicts Mickey's new animated design as of 2013. The new design calls back to his classic color model of the late 1940s. Nostalgic touches like the notched, simplified eyes make the new design feel familiar despite differing from his iconic design. His bright red shorts feature their signature yellow buttons both on the front and back of the figure. Mickey's tail curls up the back of the figure as well, forming a thin "s" shape that reaches the top of his shorts. The figure's white hands even feature the thin black lines on the back of his gloves, completing the design.

BE@RBRICK Mickey Mouse: Black & White 2020 Ver. 1000%

Mickey's classic debut design is larger than life in this 27-inch BE@RBRICK figure from Medicom Toy. The design features the fully simplified enlarged black dot eye from the late 1920s and early 1930s Mickey cartoons. His flat eyes and wide smile convey Mickey's early, more mischievous personality. The overall color palette in black and white follows the same color conventions as the early Mickey designs. His shorts are white with white buttons, matching his shoes and gloves. On the back, Mickey's tail curves up to the top of his shorts, resting between the two backside buttons.

About Disney

Disney, also known as the Walt Disney Company, is an American mass media conglomerate formed in 1923. The company is most well-known for its film department and particularly its animation. Disney expanded starting in the 1950s to include television and live-action media production. In the 1980s, the company began acquiring more corporate divisions to provide a wider range of content. Today, some of these acquisitions include ESPN, National Geographic, Lucasfilm, and Marvel Studios. Disney also operates over 14 amusement parks and multiple publishing, distributing, and streaming companies.

About Mickey Mouse

Mickey Mouse is a cartoon character created in 1928 by Walt Disney. He is an anthropomorphic black mouse that wears red shorts, white gloves, and yellow shoes. Mickey debuted in the animated short, Steamboat Willie. The film solidified Mickey's design which would serve as his default appearance in the following decade. Initially, Mickey was characterized as a hapless suitor for his counterpart, Minnie Mouse. Over time, he became more of a loveable rogue and eventually a nice guy hero. Mickey is one of the world's most recognizable characters and the studio mascot for the Walt Disney Company. A study conducted by Disney officials states that 98% of children ages 3-11 can recognize Mickey at some level.

Other Important Disney Characters

Mickey Mouse first rose to prominence as a solo act. However, as his popularity grew, Mickey gained two best friends that would appear with him in numerous comedy exploits.

Donald Duck

Donald Duck is an anthropomorphic duck character created by Disney in 1934. Donald wears a sailor hat and matching sailor shirt and no pants. He first appeared in the short The Wise Little Hen in which his unintelligible, angry speech debuted. In his second appearance, Donald's character was further developed as a comedic foil to Mickey Mouse. Throughout the 1930s, he appeared in a comedic trio with Mickey and Goofy. He received his own cartoon series Don Donald that introduced audiences to his girlfriend Daisy Duck and nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie. The Donald Duck Universe is a fan name given to the Donald Duck-centric cartoons and comics. This universe introduced characters such as Scrooge McDuck and the town of Duckburg.

Goofy

Goofy is an anthropomorphic dog that wears a turtleneck, vest, pants, shoes, crumpled hat, and white gloves. His name comes from his clumsy, hapless nature. Goofy first appeared as a slightly older dog named Dippy Dawg in the 1932 cartoon Mickey's Revue. His second appearance donned his current name, Goofy. Goofy often appears in a comedy trio with Mickey and Donald, bringing slapstick-style humor to their dynamic. He was reimagined in the 1950s as an everyman father with his son, Max Goof. The comics of Goofy and Max inspired the 1992 cartoon series, Goof Troop. Goofy was also the first classic Disney character to receive a solo film in 1995's A Goofy Movie.
