■ A Manufacturing Method That Uses the Incredible Technological Skills of Japanese Artisans
This extravagant jewellery collection is made using the techniques that are used to create actual Japanese swords.

K. Uno employs over 200 Japanese artisans, each possessing incredible technological skills, to create its made-to-order jewellery. In creating its Touken Ranbu -Online- collaboration jewellery, K. Uno used the manufacturing methods that are used to create Japanese swords, rather than the methods that are typically used to make jewellery. Each item in the collection is a true work of art, crafted to an outstanding standard. It's almost as though you can feel the spirit of a Japanese sword residing inside each one-of-a-kind piece of jewellery.

■ A Special Necklace Created Using the Japanese Sword Manufacturing Process
A stunning design created by repeatedly folding and welding metals such as tamahagane steel.

◆ About Tamahagane
Tamahagane is the highest quality steel produced via the tatara (clay tub furnace) smelting process. Tamahagane is a vital material in the production of Japanese swords, so this special necklace is made using the very same material.

◆ About Orikaeshi-Tanren (Fold Forging)
In order to produce a strong Japanese sword, metals such as tamahagane are hammered to stretch them out before being folded, a process known as orikaeshi-tanren, meaning "fold forging." Repeatedly folding and welding the beaten out metal makes it tougher and stronger, and also removes impurities. This process produces a strong sword with a beautiful texture.

◆ Tempering & Polishing ("Tanto Tamahagane -Hamon-" Only)
In order to create a beautiful hamon blade pattern, the "Tanto Tamahagane -Hamon-" necklace is tempered and polished. When creating a sword, a clay coating is applied to create the hamon, but the pattern of each sword differs to the next depending on how the clay is applied. The hardness and curve of a sword are achieved by tempering the metal, and when it's finally polished, the beautiful grain pattern appears. Each "Tanto Tamahagane -Hamon-" is made by hand by an artisan, making it a totally unique piece of jewellery just for you.

◆ Hyoumen Yaki ("Tanto Tamahagane -Kuroyaki-" Only)
To produce a beautiful texture on the metal, "Tanto Tamahagane -Kuroyaki-" is made using the hyoumen yaki technique. Meaning "surface tempering," this process transforms the colour of the metal into a beautiful bluish black.

◆ Inlaying ("Tanto Tamahagane -Hamon-" and "Tanto Mokume-Gane -Tsukurikomi-" Only)
Inlaying is the process by which one material is inlayed into a different material. It's used to decorate the handles of Japanese swords. The sword crests at the tip of each necklace are all added using the inlaying process.

■ A Necklace Made Using the Traditional Mokume-Gane Technique Passed Down Across 400 Years

◆ About Mokume-Gane
A metalworking procedure that's unique to Japan, mokume-gane was created around 400 years ago in the Edo period. It can be translated as "wood grain metal," and by using forge welding to join together layers of different coloured metals, a beautiful metal is created with the appearance of natural wood grain. Mokume-gane is often used for the guard of a sword, or for the kozuka decorative handle fitting of a kogatana (a small knife that attaches to the sheath of a sword).

The beautiful wood grain-like pattern created by the layered and interweaving metals is completely unique, and no two examples are alike. The mokume-gane used in this collection is made from platinum, white gold, and silver. The subtle differences in colour within the beautiful silvery metal create a gorgeous wood grain pattern. Each mokume-gane necklace created by the artisans at K. Uno is one of a kind.
